Teen dies of motocross injuries
Ontario Provincial Police say no charges to be laid
By Tara BOWIE,
Wednesday,
August 29, 2007
Track conditions were not at fault in the death of a 15-year-old
motocross rider near Williamsford, an Ontario Provincial Police
investigation has concluded.
Grey County Ontario Provincial Police media relations officer
Const. Drew
WILDER said Tuesday that no charges will be laid.
Zachary ANKNER of Orangeville was practising at Motopark when
he lost control of his bike,
WILDER said.
He was travelling alone when the crash occurred on a portion
of the track where a rider can gain enough speed to hit a jump
and clear two hills.
ANKNER hit the crest of the jump and travelled 10 metres (30 feet)
before losing control.
He was wearing all required protective gear, but suffered serious
head trauma and was airlifted to Toronto's Hospital for Sick
Children and later died of his injuries on August 18.
Motopark owner Carl
BASTEDO said
ANKNER was an experienced rider.
He started riding at the age of 10 and raced at the park in several
competitions this season.
All races at the track are sanctioned by the Canadian Motocross
Association, which requires each rider to have a racing licence
to compete.
"It's an extreme sport and with that comes risk. All we can do
is make sure everybody stays as safe as they can," he said.
BASTEDO has owned and operated the park since it opened 35 years
ago.
ANKNER's death is the second in the park's history. The first
was in 2001.
BASTEDO said more than 10,000 riders will use the park between
April and October and at this point in the season six riders
have been injured needing ambulance assistance.
