Scalding leads to murder charge
By Canadian Press, Wed., September 19, 2007
Toronto -- Toronto police say a mother accused in the death of
her toddler will have charges against her upgraded to second-degree
murder.
Eighteen-month-old Miguel
FERNANDES was rushed to hospital last
Wednesday night with what appeared to be scalding burns.
Police were called to an apartment by a concerned neighbour who
heard screaming.
After the boy died, officers initially charged his mother, 22-year-old
Melissa ALEXANDER, with aggravated assault.
ALEXANDER appeared in a Toronto court yesterday.
Det.-Sgt. Dan
SHEPPARD said autopsy results shed further light
on the child's ordeal.
"Being scalded like that, the pain and suffering that he must
have went through is a terrible thing," he told CTV News
outside court.
"As a police officer, someone has to talk for him now."
