Graduate of the University of Toronto. Received her M.A. in sociology at age 55. Served at Canadian Facts and the Addiction Research Foundation. Dear aunt of Marilyn STARZYNSKI, Judith CAMPBELL, both of Toronto, and Linda FLYNN of Liverpool, England. Predeceased by her sisters Dorothy, Frances, and Anne. Eleanor was a Veteran who was proud of her services to the War Blind - St. Dunstans in England during World War 2. This contribution to Canada was celebrated with her fellow Veterans and life long Friends through the Overseas Club. She also volunteered for 50 years at The Canadian Red Cross. Her 30 plus years of retirement were highlighted by travelling with her husband and many happy family occasions. Eleanor's wide range of interests and living life to the fullest are the family's fondest memories. Cremation has taken place. Weighing in at 7 lbs 14 oz and at a lengthy 22 inches long, Jack's Bergamasck/Slovak heritage is obvious as he continues to snack and snooze his way through each new day. Mommy, Rebecca (nee STASKO,) in eager and hushed tones whispers, "Finally, I can drink a good glass of Amarone!" Daddy, Gian Paolo, proudly exclaims, "Non vedo l'ora di andare per boschi Eng montagne con Jack!" Nonno Gianni and Nonna Teresina PASINI and cousins Marco and Lisa, (of Clusone, Italy) can be heard echoing "Fantastico" across the Alps. For many years, Lucille and a friend celebrated August 10, 1952, as the marker of their shared destiny - their contact with polio.
A happy childhood with her loving family was punctuated with numerous medical interventions. Since life in a wheelchair made the local secondary school inaccessible, Lucille completed high school in the United States. Although unable to continue her formal education, she was extremely well-read, curious and astute.
In 1973, Lucille married activist and Ryerson English professor Bill OWEN. She greatly enjoyed the years they spent at the University of Kentucky, where Bill earned a PhD.
During that time she renewed her Friendship with Margaret STATON, whom she had met as a teenager at Toronto's Lyndhurst Lodge rehabilitation centre.
In 1994, Margaret named Lucille to the initial board of her Ethel Louise Armstrong Foundation (named after Margaret's grandmother), created to "promote… the inclusion of people with disabilities."
Overcoming a fear of flying, Lucille made numerous trips to California for board meetings. In 2004, the foundation honoured her with the Lucille Fortier Owen Scholarship.
In Chicago in 1981, Lucille and a friend attended a conference at which post-polio issues came to the fore. Together they nudged the Ontario March of Dimes to re-establish a post-polio program.
Lucille championed accessible health care for women with disabilities and always provided excellent analyses of the politics of disability and other social change campaigns.
When diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2001, Lucille became an informed decision maker in her own care. She astonished her palliative care team by long outlasting her initial prognosis. Lucille personally organized a note and a gift to be given to each member of her support circle after her death.
When Bill died in 2005, Lucille established the Bill and Lucille Owen scholarship at Ryerson University. Advisers had persuaded her to add her name, to provide a role model for female students and to underline her part in "their lifetime work to secure social justice through public policy."

Of Mount Forest, formerly of Proton Township in her 86th year. Passed away at Saugeen Valley Nursing Centre, Mount Forest on Saturday, December 16, 2006. Beloved wife of the late Franz HUTTER. Loved mother of Frank HUTTER and wife Susan of Toronto, Gertrude VANALSTINE and husband Ronald of R.R.#2 Holstein and predeceased by infant daughter Erika HUTTER. Elizabeth will be sadly missed by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dear sister of Maria STAUDACHAR of Ridgewood, New York and Josef MATZELLE of Kapuskasing. Predeceased by brothers John and Henry MATZELLE. Friends called at the Hendrick Funeral Home, Mount Forest on Sunday. A prayer vigil was held Sunday evening at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass was celebrated at Saint Mary of the Purification Church, Mount Forest on Monday, December 18 at 11 a.m. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.
