KERTES, Paul
Father, storyteller. Born July 18, 1921, in Budapest, Hungary. Died March 26 in Toronto of complications following a heart attack, aged 85.
By Joe KERTES, Page L8
If my father left a lasting impression on us three boys in our childhood, it was that of a storyteller and reader. And he was the consummate reader. In his prime, he read a dozen books a week.
He read recklessly, sometimes tearing out the first half of a book once he'd finished so he wouldn't need to carry the whole thing around. He read the classics, quoting Latin and Greek into his 86th year. He often quoted Macbeth. His favourite book in the end was Hitler's Mistakes. I think he loved it because he was one of Hitler's mistakes, one of the few Hungarian Jews who got away and lived to tell the tale.
He was philosophical about his life, quite aware of his own limitations and accomplishments. In one discussion, I said that St. Augustine divided the human race into two camps: those who are here merely to use the world and those who try to leave something of value behind. I asked him which camp he belonged to. He shrugged and replied, "I did what I could. I survived. I married your mother. If I did nothing else, I brought you to Canada." But he was staring at me. He sensed that what he had done was not enough for St. Augustine or me. He said, "And I had you three children - except I didn't have children; I had critics."
He had such remarkable characteristics. He was the worst driver I've ever seen. Once, on Bay Street, he parked, threw open his door and watched as a truck tore it off. Another time he parallel parked by hitting the car in front, then the one in back, the one in front, the one in back, then got out, put a coin in the meter and walked off.
He finally lost his licence, along with his wife of 60 years, and sold his house. That was when his slide began. He didn't want to go on without Hilda, our mother. When he fell ill last December, he asked a nurse to please leave him alone. "But look at you," the nurse said. "You have your three sons around you and all these darling grandchildren. You're a lucky man."
"I'll tell you what," my father replied. "When I die, I'll leave my luck to you."
He'd seen most of the 20th century: the awful war that wiped out half his family; he saw the Russian occupation of Hungary, and led us out in an escape plan that meant crossing the border by foot at night into Austria, then travelling all the way to Canada to make a new life.
On his last afternoon he smiled at Talia, his youngest grandchild, and said, "Hi, darling" - the oldest Kertes speaking to one 82 years his junior. He then said that he needed to be with Hilda, and so he managed his final escape.
Joe KERTES is one of Paul's sons.
