MacINNIS,
Doctor
Cameron
Died peacefully on July 11, 2007, at Saint Michael's Hospital,
Toronto, in his 82nd year, with Mary, his devoted sister, at
his side. Born March 25, 1926 in West Bay, Nova Scotia, Cameron
was the son of Alexander and Janet
(CAMERON)
MacINNIS.
Besides
his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Ian and Allister,
and nephew, David
MacINNIS. He is survived by beloved sisters
Anna (Grey)
AUSTIN,
Calgary, and Mary
MacINNIS, Toronto, thirteen
nieces and nephews, seventeen great-nieces and nephews, and countless
Friends. Cameron received his primary and secondary education
in West Bay and Sydney, Nova Scotia, following which he graduated
Bachelor of Science from Dalhousie University in 1946, and Bachelor
of Engineering (Honours Civil Engineering) from the Technical
University of Nova Scotia in 1948. After working as a research
engineer for Ontario Hydro for eleven years, he was awarded a
bursary by the Cement and Concrete Association (United Kingdom)
for doctoral studies in concrete technology at the University
of Durham (England), receiving the degree of Doctor of Philosophy
in 1962. Cameron was appointed professor of Civil Engineering
at the University of Windsor in 1963, beginning a long and distinguished
career as an outstanding teacher, researcher, and administrator.
He was head of the Department of Civil Engineering from 1976 to
1979 and Dean of Engineering from 1979 to 1989, retiring as Professor
Emeritus in 1991. An internationally recognized expert on concrete,
Cameron's research was supported over many years by grants from
the National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada,
and resulted in numerous scientific articles. He and former student,
Dr. Norbert
BECKER, received the prestigious Wason Medal for
Materials Research of the American Concrete Institute in 1975,
for the best paper of the year in that field. In recognition
of his outstanding contributions to engineering science Cameron
was made a Life Member and Fellow of the Canadian Society of
Civil Engineering, a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute,
and a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada. However,
what gave him the greatest pleasure were the accomplishments
of his students. Cameron also distinguished himself in professional
and community service. He was a referee for numerous scholarly
journals and for National Science and Engineering Research Council
of Canada and the National Research Council of Canada, a member
of various technical committees of the Canadian Standards Association
and the American Concrete Institute, and Chairman of the Board
of the Border Cities Branch of the Engineering Institute of Canada.
He served on the University of Windsor Senate and Board of Governors,
the Council of Ontario Universities, the Board of Directors of
the London Goodenough Association of Canada, and the Board of
Windsor's Metropolitan Hospital. Cameron manifested his strong
commitment to human rights through membership in Amnesty International
and as an envoy of the First Unitarian Church, Toronto, to the
United Nations Non-governmental Organization. Cameron's life
was enriched by his love of art, music, and theatre. He was a
voracious reader and a wonderful conversationalist. He travelled
extensively, with favourite destinations being Great Britain
and Nova Scotia. Cameron had a delightful and of ten mischievous
sense of humour. His gregarious nature was a hallmark of who
he was. He was comfortable in any social situation and had a
marvellous capacity to put others at ease. A man of high principles
and great integrity, he was exemplary in his loyalty and devotion
to family and Friends. Cameron will be remembered as a true gentleman,
and is held in the greatest respect and affection by all who
were so very fortunate to know him. A celebration of Cameron's
life will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2007 at 2: 00 p.m.
at the First Unitarian Church, 175 St. Clair Avenue West, Toronto.
Immediately following there will be a reception at the Church.
As an expression of sympathy and respect donations may be made

ROBINSON,
Diana
Graeme (née
CAMERON)
Diana passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 13, 2007
at the age of 87. She experienced a wonderful day of talking
with her Boys (Duncan, Kim (Barb
McMURRAY,)
Chris and Graeme
(Deborah SMEATON,) joking and feeling the love that she had come
to know so well by the loving and caring staff at the Briton
House. It was the perfect send off for an exceptional lady who
was a caring mother, inspirational leader and a cherished friend.
Mom, you will always be remembered as Bang On! You are now able
to join your beloved husband John, who died far too young. Born
on November 2, 1919 as the only daughter of Malcolm and Flora
CAMERON,
Diana was schooled at the best schools from Bishop Strachan
School in Toronto to finishing school in Paris. Her spirit and
intellect were recognized by the Royal Canadian Air Force when
she enlisted at the age of 19 and she was eventually promoted
to the position of Squadron Leader and operated as one of the
highest ranking officers in England. It was during the war that
she fell in love once again with her childhood sweetheart John.
Following the war, she returned to finish her education at the
University of Western Ontario and marry, which began the next
incredible part of her life. She brought her four Boys into the
world with whom she had a magical love. She paid her dues bringing
up, by herself, four teenage boys but the inevitable trials that
involved only cemented the deep bond between mother and sons.
She also became an important example to her five grandchildren
(Zoe-Ann, Michael Lauren, John and Jacquie) as she showed them
her strength of character. Diana found great comfort in her move
to the Briton House where she lived independently for many years
and then with the constant love and attention of the ninth floor
staff over the last year. We will never be able to thank enough
Maria, Hilaria, Lourdes and too many others to name for their
devotion to the highest standards of excellence in care. Mom
left with a smile on her face knowing she had lived a wonderful
full life and was surrounded by all those she adored and whom
showed her unconditional love in return. Visitation will be from
2-4: 00 and 7-9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at the
Newbigging Funeral Home at 733 Mt. Pleasant Avenue. The funeral
service will begin at 11: 00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 19,
2007 at St. Leonard's Anglican Church at 25 Wanless Avenue. Burial
will follow at Saint_James Cemetery with reception at 1-3: 00 p.m.
at the Rosedale Golf Club, 1901 Mt. Pleasant Ave. In lieu of
flowers, donations are encouraged in the name of Diana with the
Alzheimer Society.

PERAK,
Radoslav
Son, brother, engineer, optimist. Born March 1, 1964, in Mrkonjic
Grad, former Yugoslavia. Died May 24 in Toronto, of lymphoma,
aged 43.
By Craig CAMERON,
Page L8
Radoslav PERAK was, above all else, a relentless optimist. Throughout
his life he faced challenges and twists of fate with a smile
and an unwavering belief that things would work out.
Radoslav was the younger of Borislav and Marijana's two sons.
From his early school days he was drawn to understanding how
things worked and devising ways to make them work better.
He spent leisure time studying to improve his skills and knowledge,
whether the subject was computing, classical guitar or languages.
Radoslav studied mechanical engineering at the University of
Sarajevo and graduated in 1990. He landed a job at an engineering
firm, designing parts for Volkswagen cars.
He loved his job and felt fortunate that someone was willing
to pay him to do it.
The civil war that engulfed Yugoslavia in the early 1990s tore
the country apart.
When the conflict dragged on, the family fled Sarajevo for neighbouring
Slovenia.
Radoslav and his brother, Miroslav, were able to work in Slovenia
right away, but conditions there were also growing worse. The
family applied to come to Canada and were eventually offered
relocation to either Montreal or Toronto.
On August 31, 1994, the
PERAK family arrived in Toronto, settling
into a neighbourhood that came to be known as Little Sarajevo.
English lessons began almost immediately. For Radoslav, so steeped
in the logic and laws of science, the seemingly endless number
of "exceptions" to English grammar rules proved frustrating,
but he maintained his sense of humour.
At a party, after watching a fellow student dance around singing
I Like to Move It, Move It, Radoslav announced he had decided
on his new career. "I'm going to write the words to songs," he
said with a sly grin, "because you don't need to know much English."
Radoslav and Miroslav were inseparable. They bought a car and
a condo together. They also treated themselves to the occasional
fine cognac, and vacations in Mexico, the Dominican Republic
and Cuba.
When Radoslav was diagnosed with lymphoma in April, 2006, he
delayed telling his parents to avoid upsetting them and because
he believed he was going to recover.
A year later, when doctors told him he probably had less than
six months to live, his response typified his optimism.
"First, the doctors didn't know what was wrong with me. Then
they didn't know how to make me better. Now, they say they know
when I'm going to die? Don't worry. There's still hope!"
Craig CAMERON is Radoslav's friend and former English teacher.
