McINTOSH, Mavis Irene (formerly
KNOWLES, née
MALLINSON)
It is with great sadness that the three children of Mavis Irene
Knowles McINTOSH announce her passing on June 2, 2007, at the
age of 86. Mom passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Village
of Sandalwood Park Nursing Home, Brampton, Ontario. Beloved wife
and companion for 15 years of John Albert
McINTOSH who passed
away in 2004. Loving and devoted wife for 29 years of Frederick
KNOWLES who passed away in 1972. Loving mother and mother-in-law
of Rosemary and Harvey
BRUNER,
Carolyn
KNOWLES and Guy
BONNETTA,
and Ansy KROUGLICOF and Harold
KNOWLES. Dear grandmother of Katie
(Neil MARUOKA), Emily (Vadim
KAZAKOV), Jennifer, Maggie, Heidi,
Andrew, Nicholas, and Jonathan. Mom's last outing was on April 25th,
2007 when she visited her great-granddaughter Molly Noelle
MARUOKA
who was just nine days old. Mavis will be sadly missed by her
brothers and sisters-in-law Nancy and Kenneth
MALLINSON
(Langley,
British Columbia), Pat
BURNS and John
MALLINSON (Lachine, Quebec),
Audrey KNOWLES (Pointe Claire, Quebec), Mary
BRANDON (Fenelon
Falls, Ontario,) and Isobel and Doug
CLERK
(Fenelon
Falls,
Ontario,)
her nieces, nephews and cousins. Mavis is predeceased by her
brothers Robert and Harold
MALLINSON.
She has relatives and Friends
right across Canada, from British Columbia to the Atlantic Provinces
and will be fondly remembered by them all. Mom was born in Montreal
on July 9th, 1920, the daughter of Donalda Grace
(WOOD) and George
James MALLINSON.
She graduated from West Hill High School in
1938. After completing a secretarial course, she worked at Ciba
Company and Allied War Supplies. As the daughter of an National
Hockey League referee, she had a great love of sports throughout
her life. She was a member of the Notre-Dame de Grace Tennis
Club and spent many winter weekends in the Laurentians skiing.
After her marriage to Fred in 1943, the couple enjoyed teaching
their children how to have fun. Ice skating, swimming, bike riding,
fishing and going on picnics were family pastimes. For many years,
Mavis and Fred were enthusiastic members of the Montreal West
Curling Club. Mom was also an active member of Westmount Baptist
Church and taught Bible study at the church's summer retreat
in the Eastern Townships, Cedar Lodge. In 1979, Mom moved to
Brampton to be closer to her grandchildren. She took up lawn
bowling and joined the local Brampton club. In early 1989, Mom
was introduced to John
McINTOSH.
The happy couple married and
moved to Belleville where they enjoyed visits with John's family.
Mom was a member of the Belleville Newcomers Club and Ladies
Euchre Group. As well as ensuring her children were well educated,
Mom passed on to them a great love of music. She was herself
part of many musical organizations. She sang in the Westmount
Baptist Choir and the Brampton Choral Society, and was a member
of the Sandalwood Chime Choir. She loved listening to performances
of the Metropolitan Opera on the radio and tolerated her son's
rock band practices in the basement of the Belmore Avenue home.
Mom was a helpful daughter, a caring sister, a good wife and
a wonderful mother. She was a proud and loving grandmother. Most
important of all, you could not ask for a better friend. We will
all miss her infectious laugh. Many thanks to the staff at Sandalwood
who looked after Mom with kindness, patience, and understanding.
Also, thank-you to the nursing staff in Ward 4A at the Peel Memorial
Hospital. A private cremation has taken place. A memorial service
will be held in the chapel at Montreal Memorial Park, 3955 Cote
de Liesse, St. Laurent, Quebec, on June 23rd, 2007 at 12: 00 noon,
followed by interment. Afterwards, there will be a reception
at the home of Harold
KNOWLES, 256 Percival Avenue, Montreal
West, H4X 1T9. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations for the
new Brampton Civic Hospital may be made to the William Osler
Health Centre Foundation, Brampton Office, 20 Lynch Street, Brampton,
Ontario, L6W 9Z9 at (905) 796-4018.

GRANT,
Doreen
Violet (née

In her 84th year, as a result of a debilitating stroke, Doreen
passed away surrounded by her family and under the compassionate
care of the staff at Sunnybrook Hospital. Even though she was
paralyzed and without speech, Doreen was able to communicate
expressions of her love to the members of her family and Friends
at her bedside with a smile and a squeeze of the hand. She was
predeceased in 1983 by her husband of over 40 years, William
(Bill) A. GRANT, an executive of Philips Electronics. She leaves
behind her family: daughter Margaret, daughter Karen (Larry
JACKSON,)
daughter-in-law Carol
GRANT and son Hugh (Sheri
PURCELL.)
She
is lovingly remembered by her four grandchildren, Scott (Liz
PLATTS), Tracey (Dave

and Kate JACKSON; and one great-grandchild, Jessica
MacDONALD

Bert COWAN
(Sue) of Vancouver and George
COWAN (Lena) of Port
Colborne also mourn her passing. She is predeceased by her siblings:
Het NURSE,

JOHNSON. Doreen remained vigorous,
vibrant and independent until her stroke. She lived in her own
home, carefully tended her own gardens and played bridge with
a number of groups. 'Granny' was a welcome and active participant
in the lives of her children and their families. The day of the
stroke she was taking pleasure in the warm spring sun from her
seat on the front porch swing of her home. Through her life Doreen
was an active force in everything in which she became involved.
Through the fifties and sixties, summers at the 'Lake of Two
Rivers' cottage meant all the Algonquin Park staff knew her by
name. She was also active in the Progressive Conservative Party
at both the federal and provincial levels, participating in many
election and leadership campaigns. Following cremation, a visitation
will be held at the Pine Hills Visitation, Chapel and Reception
Centre, 625 Birchmount Road, Toronto (416-267-8229) on Sunday,

Police point to diabetes as probable cause of death for Algoma
Chief Executive Officer's daughter
By Unnati GANDHI,
Page
A20
The daughter of Algoma Steel Inc. president and Chief Executive
Officer Denis
TURCOTTE likely suffered diabetic complications
before dying in her Ryerson University dorm room, police and
family say.
When Adele
TURCOTTE, 17, didn't answer her phone all day Thursday,
her mother, Julie, called one of her daughter's Friends who lives
in the same residence building to check on her, Toronto police
Detective Robert
GORDON said yesterday.
The friend found her in bed in her sixth-floor single room without
vital signs about 4: 15 p.m.
A postmortem examination conducted yesterday was inconclusive,
but Det. GORDON said foul play is not suspected and police are
not looking for witnesses. Police have also ruled out suicide.
The first-year fashion student had diabetes since she was six
years old, "and worked hard at having a normal life in spite
of it," her family wrote in a death notice.
The coroner's office is now awaiting the results of a toxicology
test, which "examines fluids of the body, the blood and everything
to see what's in there - you know, alcohol, drugs, whatever her
insulin level was at the time," Det.
GORDON said.
Ms. TURCOTTE, who was born in Saint John but grew up in Sault
Ste. Marie, Ontario, "was the best friend a girl could have,"
one of her closest Friends, Stefanie
BRUZAS, 18, said from Sault
Ste. Marie last night.
"She's been through everything with me. A rough breakup, a fight
with my Friends - she would never take sides but she would talk
me through it."
Ms. BRUZAS, who is also attending school in Toronto, said Ms.
TURCOTTE
had designed her own clothing line, Turca, before being accepted
at Ryerson and would often dress in her own designs when going
out.
"She was doing everything she wanted to," Ms.
BRUZAS said. "She
knew how to have fun, but she always got her work done. She made
great Friends after moving to Toronto, but stuck with her old
ones. Her life was perfect. She was perfect."
