BLAIR,
Karen
Elizabeth (née
DEWOLF)
Wife, mother, volunteer, marathon runner, blood donor, advocate
of the happy hour. Born April 30, 1958, in Peterborough, Ontario
Died April 9 in Peterborough, of colon cancer, aged 48.
By Jacqueline
WELLS,
Page L8
Karen was the youngest of four children born to Stan and Alice
DEWOLF.
Wolfie, as she was affectionately known, grew up in the south
end of Peterborough, Ontario, and after attending college worked
for many years in the local Sears store.
With her gift of the gab (inherited from her sharp-witted mother),
Karen never had difficulty making Friends.
She met her husband, Bill
BLAIR, while the two were vacationing
with Friends in the Caribbean. Bill worked as an accountant on
Bay Street, but within a short period of time Karen persuaded
him of the lifestyle benefits of the Kawartha Lakes region.
Bill moved to Peterborough and married Karen. They had two sons,
Taylor and Connor. There was nothing Karen enjoyed more then
watching Taylor swing a golf club or Connor handle a hockey stick.
Always a sports enthusiast, she took up distance running after
the birth of the boys. Her interest wasn't about setting personal-best
times, but rather about motivating others to be the best they
could be.
On her first trip to run in the Boston Marathon, she brought
along some girlfriends who, until then, were not runners.
They cheered Karen on, and when she completed her race she corralled
all of them and hobbled off to the nearest bar, where she led
the whole bar in a spirited rendition of O Canada. Those gals
were hooked and are all avid runners today.
In February, 2006, Karen was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer
that had spread to her liver. She had surgery and began biweekly
chemotherapy in Toronto.
She fought hard. One, two, sometimes three people accompanied
Karen to her treatments. I remember her sitting cross-legged
in her hospital bed receiving chemotherapy- and she had everyone
within earshot laughing hysterically.
Karen found strength in what brought her joy. She relished small
pleasures, a cold Corona or a glass of Wolf Blass. She lived
passionately, gave with kindness, loved completely, made you
laugh until you couldn't stop, and gave blood every 56 days -
always bringing along a new recruit.
In February, she was told there was nothing further the doctors
could do. Karen went home and planned her own funeral; she phoned
people asking them to be pallbearers, readers and singers.
She spent her last few weeks welcoming people into her home to
share stories, memories and, of course, laughter.
Karen did a beautiful job of paving the way for the rest of us.
The last time I saw her, she told me she loved me and said: "If
you can get up each day and put two feet on the floor, it's a
good day."
Jacqueline
WELLS is Karen's friend.
