McDONALD,
Ida McNaughton (née
BRILL)
By Marylyn
FRYER and Thomas
OATES,
Page
A16
Psychiatrist, world traveller, musician, painter, bridge player.
Born November 13, 1913, in Teeswater, Ontario Died July 15 in
London, Ontario, of natural causes, aged 92.
Ida McNaughton
BRILL was born the younger of two daughters of
Samuel Robbins
BRILL and Mary Etta (Minnie)
McNAUGHTON.
Samuel
BRILL was a local Liberal powerbroker and the family once hosted
former Prime Minister Wilfred Laurier for dinner at their home,
Coral Villa. Doctor Ida (as she was known throughout much of her
life) had a full head of Anne of Green Gables red hair (a colour
she favoured right until the end).
The daughter of a prominent businessman -- who owned the oldest
creamery in Ontario (second oldest in Canada, established in
1875, still in operation) -- she grew up believing she could
be more than just an ordinary housewife and mother. She was smart
enough to skip two grades, although her teachers considered left-handedness
almost a defect. "I was persuaded to change from being left-handed
to right-handed. It worked," Doctor Ida noted.
Dr.
Ida met her future husband, Herbert
McDONALD, when she was
a 14-year-old in a local church youth group but her mother was
disapproving; the young 18-year-old was a mere pig farmer. A deal
was struck; it was decided that Ida would pursue her education
post-high school (she graduated from Wingham District High School
at 16; she had travelled there by train every Monday morning
and returned home Friday). She studied at Victoria College, the
University of Toronto, earning her B.A. in 1936. She earned her
medical degree in 1939, interning at Saint Michael's Hospital.
Dr. Ida specialized in psychiatry, only one of eight women in
the class of 1940 to do so, completing her training in 1942.
Having kept her end of the deal with her father (who had already
passed away), Doctor Ida ended her lengthy courtship and married
Herbert McDONALD on September 26, 1942, and together they raised
four children (Elizabeth, James, Jeanette and Herbert Jr.) on
a small family farm. During the Second World War, she put her
medical skills to use, visiting patients by horse and buggy,
even bringing along her infant daughter while carrying her second
child.
But once her children were old enough, Doctor Ida took a full time
position at the London Psychiatric Hospital, co-founding the
Behaviour Modification Unit and working there until her retirement
in 1981. Doctor Ida embraced the newer practices, including new
drug therapies, but she also used her faith to instill strength
and hope in her patients. In her soft-spoken but firm way, she
was particularly good at working with violent young offenders.
Dr. Ida loved to travel. Among her earliest adventures: trips
by train to the West Coast and various cruises, including one
through the Panama Canal. She also travelled extensively throughout
Europe.
Upon her retirement, she once again began to travel in earnest,
despite her husband's increasing infirmity, seeing China, New
Zealand and Australia. Following his death in 1994, Doctor Ida began
to travel with Madeline
WUNSCH, her former head nurse at the
hospital. She spent every winter, including last winter, in Lakeland,
Florida
She played the piano and was a member of various choirs throughout
her life, a life member of both the Women's Institute and the
service club Soroptomist International, receiving a Woman of
Distinction award in 2001. Doctor Ida also became an amateur oil
painter. She loved bridge, a game she loved and played well.
To the end, strong and alert, she maintained a benevolent but
firm role as family matriarch. Death, when it came, was not easy
for her to accept. Her love of life and her spirit were simply
too strong to enter that good night so easily.
Marilyn and Thomas are Friends of Ida
McDONALD.
They wrote this
with help from the McDonald family.
