Second boy who fell in pond dies
By Unnati GANDHI, Page A7
Toronto -- A 15-year-old boy who fell through a sheet of thin ice into a Scarborough pond with a friend last week died yesterday.
Kishoban ALAKESWARAN spent a week in critical condition at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children before he was removed from life support yesterday.
"Although the doctor said there was no hope of him surviving his oxygen levels weren't going very well -- we all had hope, and his mom had faith that God would bring her son home," said Kishoban's cousin, Nithja VARATHARAJAN, 18, last night.
Kishoban had been on his way to a soccer game with Friends when they came across the pond on the unusually warm winter's day. The Friends tested the strength of the ice by throwing increasingly larger rocks onto its surface. Even though some went through, Kishoban was adamant to try to walk across, Friends said.
When he crashed through the ice, his 11-year-old friend, Birunthan NADARAJAH, tried to rescue him but the ice gave way and Birunthan died. Kishoban's family has said they will be nominating Birunthan for a bravery medal.
The Grade 10 Woburn Collegiate Institute student was known for his exceptionally high marks in school, especially in math and computers.
"His intelligence really made the family proud," Ms. VARATHARAJAN said. His body can be viewed on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Ogden Funeral Home at 4164 Sheppard Avenue East. Cremation will be held on Thursday.

Pond claims second boy
By Henry STANCU, Meghan WATERS, Staff Reporters
A 15-year-old boy who fell through pond ice near his northeast Toronto home with a friend eight days ago has died in hospital without ever regaining consciousness.
Kishoban ALAKESWARAN was throwing stones on a frozen pond near Morningside Ave. and Finch Ave. E. with his 11-year-old friend Brunthan NADARAJAH when he went through the thin ice.
Brunthan drowned while trying to rescue Kishoban, who later remained unconscious in the Hospital for Sick Children while his parents and family kept a constant bedside vigil.
He was taken off life support early yesterday as his parents prayed.
Last night, stricken relatives and Friends gathered at the home of Kishoban's parents.
"He was a very nice kid. Very independent," said cousin Nithja VARATHARAJAN, 18, who described the teen as an extremely bright student in Grade 10 at Woburn Collegiate.
Friends and family said they could easily imagine him succeeding in a career that involved computers and science.
"All his marks were above 90 this term and his lowest mark was 90," the cousin said.
The oldest of three children, Kishoban and his family emigrated to Canada from Sri Lanka in 2000. His brother, 14, and 9-year-old sister both looked up to him, the cousin said. She said the family prayed, believing the critically injured teen would somehow pull through.
"Even when the doctors said they couldn't help him, his mother had faith and believed he'd come home, and now she's really devastated."
A funeral service is planned for Thursday.
Brunthan was buried Saturday in Highland Memorial Gardens on Don Mills Rd., with police officers involved in the rescue effort serving as pallbearers.
Brunthan's family, from Sri Lanka, faces deportation. Canadian security officials say his father, Muralidaran NADARAJAH, is linked to the Tamil Tigers.

O'NEAL, Barbara (née SWANN)
Passed away, peacefully, at Unitarian House in Ottawa on 15 March 2006, at the age of 82. Barbara was born in Chungking, China, the first-born child of the late Doctor and Mrs. H.F. SWANN, missionaries with the United Church of Canada. She leaves behind brother Neil SWANN, of Toronto, and sister Carol IRWIN, of Sun City, Arizona. She was the loving, caring mother of sons Deems, of Surrey British Columbia, and Brian, of Gatineau, Québec. Barbara was also the much loved mother-in-law of Maggie O'NEAL, and Marthe VARY. Barbara's grandchildren, Noah and Aidan of British Columbia, Simone of Alberta, and Arielle and Caroline, of Québec, were her pride and joy and will miss her dearly. Barbara also leaves behind a great-grand daughter, Lucy, who has inherited her joyful and determined spirit. Barbara had a lifelong involvement in the visual arts. She and her husband, the late John O'NEAL, ran an art gallery in rural Nova Scotia that provided exhibition space for many young artists at the beginning of their careers. When the family moved to Ottawa in 1961, Barbara found work at the National Gallery of Canada where she was able to share her profound understanding of, and love for, art and artists with visitors to the gallery. She derived special pleasure from showing the Gallery's collections to young children who were the source of unrestrained enthusiasm and opinion about art, willing to say what adults could, or would not, say. Barbara also had an endless fascination for stimulating ideas, good writing and books, and people. Canadian Broadcasting Corporation radio and the New Yorker magazine were valued companions, and she encountered people who interested her wherever she went. Her interest in people was rooted in compassion and a desire for social justice for all in retirement, she did volunteer work, and was a staunch supporter of the New Democratic Party. In the remaining years of her life, Barbara lived at Unitarian House where she developed a close Friendship with Ray COOPER, who will miss her dearly. The family is profoundly grateful to the staff of Unitarian House for the care and support they gave to Barbara, and to Ray for the love and Friendship he provided. Barbara's Friends are invited to join her family in celebrating her life at a memorial service to be held at the Unitarian Church, 30 Cleary Avenue, at 4 p.m., Sunday, March 26, 2006. In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara's memory can be made to the National Gallery of Canada Foundation - 380 Sussex Drive, Ottawa, Ontario K1N 9N4. /Au lieu des fleurs, des dons à la mémoire de Barbara peuvent être envoyés à la Fondation du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada - 380 promenade Sussex, Ottawa (Ontario) K1N 9N4.
