Roman had so many Friends that this notice would be too small

to help others than anyone I know… he was always "there." He
excelled in his profession as a dental technologist, having owned
his own dental lab. He was a simple man who valued his Friends
above anything. His strength and character made Roman the unique
person he was. Golfing was a passion for Roman throughout his
life - not for the enjoyment of playing the game but for the
companionship of his Friends. Roman showed me how to be strong,
especially towards the end of his life. He fought his illness
with unbelievable strength and dignity. Roman will always remain
a hero who showed us all how to live and die with courage. And
I love him and will miss him… his son Tristan. Roman wished to
be cremated. A private gathering will be held on Sunday, February

GRIPTON,
James MacPherson
By Jude GRIPTON and Jamie
GRIPTON,
Page
A20
Professor of social work, father, lover of music and theatre,
gourmet. Born October 19, 1921, in Toronto. Died November 2,
2005, in Calgary, of complications due to heart disease, aged
James GRIPTON was a formidable man. He grew up in a world of
privilege, with he and his sister Catherine alternating between
homes in Toronto, Port Hope and Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario
As the eldest, and the only son, he was bred to take over the
family business, The Canada Stamp Co. But Jim was a rebel. He
spoke of change and new ideas.
When he attended the University of Toronto, he studied social
work rather than law as his family had ordained. Jim persevered
and was one of the first to earn a doctorate of social work in
Canada, in the 1950s. He had a 60-year career in social work,
which took him from the Children's Aid Society working in downtown
Toronto, and establishing the first day-camp for inner city kids,
to the University of Calgary where he served as professor long
after his so-called retirement.
Along the way he worked for the federal government, taught social
work at Carleton and at the universities of Denver and Calgary.
He is renowned as a leading-edge thinker in human sexuality,
the use of computers and the application of scientific rigour
and experimental design in clinical research.
Jim, our Dad, is another story. We cherish memories of his warmth,
humour, passion and compassion. Jude was just a baby when Jim
and our mother, Evelyn, brought home two teenagers, Eddie and
Ralphie, wards of Children's Aid. Dad fathered them through high-school
and university. He saw them achieve careers in education and
journalism -- two of many lives changed by dad's caring.
Dad was a carpenter. He built wooden toys, play sets for my mother's
day-care centres, our cottage at Kasshabog Lake, and best of
all, a full-size playhouse for Jude and a sandbox for Jamie.
Dad loved all kinds of music and theatre. We watched with wonder
as Dad "air-conducted" orchestras and we listened to him "star"
in musicals in our living room. At age 83, he attended his first
Bob Dylan concert in search of Jamie's muse (Jamie an acknowledged
Dylan scholar).
Dad was a traveller. Together we visited museums and art galleries.
Over the past 30 years he travelled extensively with his partner
Mary VALENTICH and their son, our brother Stuart.
Dad was a gourmet. Sensory delight was adventure. Jude remembers
him saying to her, a girl of 6: "Taste this creamy blue cheese
dressing. It's delicious." She did, and it was; as well, it was
the beginning of her more than 30 years as a chef.
Dad was a cottager. Our cottage was a family retreat. Dad would
show his athletic side, especially his water-skiing. At the end
of a slalom ride around the lake, there was the perfect glide
to shore.
Dad was truly a gentle soul, although his passion for life gave
us glimpses into his Scottish temper. We saw him bang his head
on the door frame and throw a file or two when frustrated; and
occasionally heard him shout "Bloody idiot!" from our car window.
Although we were distanced for many years, we came back together
in the later stage of Dad's life. Jude remembers Dad coming to
visit her lakeside cottage. "He'd put work aside. We'd canoe,
swim, gourmandize, listen to music, solve the unsolvable problems
of the world and revel in cherished memories." In the evening,
sitting on the dock, watching the glorious sunset, Dad would
hold up his glass of wine in toast: "Ah," he sighed with his
little chuckle and his big smile, "This is the life!"
Judith and Jamie are two of Jim's children; they wrote this with
help from Jamie's wife
Christine
GRIPTON.

Died peacefully on Saturday, February 25, 2006, in his 87th year
after a valiant struggle with multiple illnesses and immense
pain. Main was loved by his wife of 54 years, Frances (née
McCRAW,)
his children, Craig (Pauline
TETLEY,)
Elizabeth
(Mike
SHARIFF)
and Robert (d. 1995) and his four grandchildren, Michelle and
Carolyn SHARIFF and Alex and Jim
DUNCAN.
Main will also be missed
by his cousins Herb
VALENTINE,
Marjorie
SUTHERLAND along with
many nieces and nephews. Main devoted most of his working years
to Canadian National Railways where his career spanned 43 years,
starting as a file clerk and a Claims Agent for the Law Department.
Like many of his generation, Main's life was disrupted by World
War 2 and he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Goose
Bay, Labrador and Biggin Hill, England. After discharge, Main
attended Osgoode Law School and was called to the Ontario Bar
in 1953 and returned to Canadian National Railway to practise
transportation law. Main and his family were transferred around
the country as his responsibilities grew, eventually moving to
Montreal in 1968 where he was promoted to Vice President Law,
then Executive Vice President until he left in 1978 for an appointment
to the Ontario Highway Transport Board in Toronto where he served
for six years before retiring. Main was later awarded his Q.C.
in recognition of his distinguished career in law. Following
retirement Main travelled with Frances and volunteered in his
community and as recently as early January of 2006 was still
the well loved piano player at the Mississauga Long Term Care
Facility for other seniors. Main's was a life well lived and
he'll be remembered for his quick wit, his talent on the piano,
and his unfailing love for his wife and family. Mr.
DUNCAN is
resting at the funeral home of Skinner and Middlebrook Ltd., 128
Lakeshore Rd. E. (1 block west of Hurontario St.), Mississauga
(parking off Ann St.) on Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. Funeral
service in the chapel on Thursday, March 2, 2006 at 2: 00 p.m.

College student dies after attack
By Canadian Press, Page A19
Toronto -- A Canadian student attending a U.S. college where
he had been a star hockey player died yesterday from injuries
he suffered in a brutal attack in Toronto on the weekend.
Michael SERBA, 25, who had been on life-support since the attack,
was struck in the head with an unknown object, possibly a brick,
early Saturday morning after he left a bar.
He had returned home to Toronto over the U.S. Thanksgiving weekend
from Norwich University in Vermont, where he was originally accepted
on a hockey scholarship.
Police say Mr.
SERBA was out with Friends around 12: 30 a.m. Saturday
when he was sucker-punched after leaving a bar.
Rather than call 911, Mr.
SERBA and his Friends searched for
the culprit.
Mr. SERBA was walking ahead of his Friends when he was attacked
in an alley and suffered a serious trauma to his head.
An autopsy is to take place in Toronto today.
Police say a charge of attempted murder laid against Nicholas
CROWDIS, 22, of Toronto is expected to be upgraded at his next
court appearance December 4.
Mr. SERBA played four seasons with the Norwich Cadets. This year,
the business major was attending graduate school and was expected
to finish his studies next spring.
Toronto Police Detective Shehara
VALLES said Monday that Mr.
SERBA's
parents described their son as having "a passion for life and
family, hockey and his Friends."
The attack on Mr.
SERBA cast a pall over the Cadets' victory
last weekend at Norwich's Kreitzberg Arena, where the team defeated
Plattsburgh State 4-2 Saturday in the championship game of the
Primeline Great Northern Shootout tournament.
