Died peacefully at Woodhaven Residence, Markham, Ontario, in her 87th year. Wife of the late Harry PINN, and the late Clarence THEDE. Born in Owen Sound, daughter of the late Thomas and Isabella SHEARS. Beloved mother of Joan (James FAULKNER,) Peterboro, Terry THEDE (Carolyn,) Markham. Loved grandmother of Linda and Peter SULLIVAN, Alleta and Trevor NEEVALL, Susan and Kevin ROSS, Judy and Jason THEDE. Great-grandmother of Alexandra and Danielle SULLIVAN and Courtney and Justin ROSS. Sister of Jean (APPLETON) and Douglas SHEARS, Barrie. Predeceased by four brothers and four sisters. summer resident of Honora Bay since 1965, died peacefully at home on May 28,
2006. Calling hours were from 4: 00 - 8:00 PM on Saturday, June 3, 2006 at
the Hanson-Neely Funeral Home (311 East Lima Avenue, Ada). A memorial
service celebrating her life was held at the English Chapel, Ohio Northern
University, Ada, at 12: 30 PM on Sunday, June 4, 2006. A private internment
will be conducted at the East Lawn Cemetery, Sugarcreek, Ohio. She is
survived by: her husband, Joseph, children, Joseph G. (Newcastle upon Tyne,
UK,) Linda A. HUFFMAN (Sugarcreek, OH) and Cynthia J. CASAPINI (Zanesville,

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Sarah Beth on June 17, 2006 at the Ottawa General Hospital after a brief illness. Sarah Beth passed away in the thirty-second year of her full, productive and happy life surrounded by her loving family and Friends. She will be sorely missed by her mother, soul mate and wonderful friend Beth (BOWIE,) her adoring father, Emile and her cherished and loving brother, Christopher, his wife Diana, and her admiring nieces, Isabella, Ava and Alexa of Marlton, New Jersey, her grandmothers, Lillian BOWIE and Helene THERIEN and her special friend and companion Derek DEAVY. Daughter, sister, aunt, niece, granddaughter, sister-in-law. Born November 1, 1973 in Ottawa. Died June 17 of cardiac arrest, aged 32.
Sarah Beth, a long-time employee of the Canada Safety Council, was often the person behind Elmer the Safety Elephant. In the massive mascot costume, she waved and danced, thrilling children who came to the Santa Claus parade and other community events. From babysitter training to motorcycle training to instructor certification, she certainly made a difference in the lives of those she worked to keep healthy and safe.
When new immigrants opened a hairdressing business in the neighbourhood, Sarah Beth was one of the first customers. She recommended it to others, and the owners credit her with helping them succeed in their new life in Canada.
Sarah Beth couldn't resist giving money to street people, but was also very astute in her personal finances. Her many kindnesses started at a young age. When she was in Grade 7, one of her Friends was hospitalized for almost a year with a serious health problem. Every day, Sarah went to visit and encourage her. That young friend -- now a mother happily married with two children -- recently confided that if it were not for Sarah Beth, her young life probably would have ended.
Sarah Beth lived in a multiethnic, multicultural area in Ottawa. She often referred to that neighbourhood as "our little United Nations." She prided herself in knowing almost everyone. She boasted that the makeup of her neighbourhood represented the very future of Canada, making a great country that much greater.
In a twist of fate, just a week before she became gravely ill, Sarah Beth watched a documentary on organ donation. The program moved her to tell us: "Just so you know, I've signed a card." Organ donation can be difficult to discuss for a young, vibrant and healthy person. But she made it very clear: "If I'm gone, I want someone else to live." Who could have known how important this conversation was to be.
The family very much wanted to honour Sarah Beth's wishes to become an organ donor after the brief, sudden illness that placed her on life support. We approached an Intensive Care Unit nurse at the Ottawa Hospital and were told that brain death was the only criterion for organ donation.
Before making the independent decision to withdraw life support, we approached the health-care team about Sarah Beth's wishes to become an organ donor. The compassionate health-care team at the Ottawa Hospital and Trillium Gift of Life Network were determined to do their best to fulfill Sarah Beth's wish: She was always one to make things happen and they wanted to do the same for her. In this situation, donation after cardiac death was the only option to make Sarah Beth's wish possible.
The work done to meet Sarah Beth's wish helped change the protocol and make donation after cardiac death acceptable. donation after cardiac death marks a new era for organ donation in Canada with the potential to increase donations by 25 per cent across the country. Shortly after her death, two people received her organs. They are now on their way to full recovery.
In many ways Sarah Beth was just an ordinary person. Sarah Beth loved hockey. She was a devout Philadelphia Flyers fan but she was never reluctant to rip them when they lost. She was obsessed with neatness and having a dust-free house. She loved to entertain and cook, to try any dish that was new or different. She never sought the spotlight; for her, helping other people was its own reward. Her final act of goodness was to give two people (and many more in the future) the chance to live healthy, full lives.
Emile and Beth are Sarah Beth's parents; Christopher, her brother and Diana her sister-in-law.

Woman's last days a mystery

London police are trying to nail down what happened in the final hours of a Saint Thomas woman's life, after her body was found floating in the Thames River Saturday night.
Line THERRIEN, 36, was last seen alive about midnight last Thursday, walking near her Saint Thomas home, police said.
Two people fishing found her body 48 hours later, in the Thames River near Wellington Street in London.
What happened in the two-day period between the time THERRIEN was last seen alive and the time she was found dead is central to the police investigation, Const. Amanda PFEFFER said yesterday.
"We need to speak with anyone who may have spoken with her in those two days," she said.
"We just don't know."
THERRIEN, whose name and picture police released yesterday hoping someone might have information on her final hours, lived with her partner, Frank, on Mondamin Street near Saint Thomas's downtown strip.
The couple's tidy, powder-blue home, surrounded by a white picket fence and decorated with several potted plants, was quiet yesterday but for the barking of dogs.
A next-door neighbour said the pair had asked him to take care of the dogs Saturday.
Charles HERDMAN said the couple had planned a day trip to Port Dover.
But when HERDMAN talked to Frank, he was told THERRIEN wasn't home yet and he wouldn't need to come over to watch the dogs.
HERDMAN, who described THERRIEN as a "nice woman" who spoke with a French accent, said he couldn't remember the last time he saw her.
Police described her as white, about five-foot-six and 140 pounds, with short blond hair. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, a red top and sandals.
Police haven't found the black leather purse THERRIEN is believed to have been carrying when she left her home.
