TECUMSEH, 1813 -- Died This Day
Shawnee war chief and nationalist born in the Ohio Valley circa
A brilliant strategist who unified the Indians against relentless
land grabs, treaty betrayals and massacres by the Americans,
he was promised a homeland by British in return for support during
the War of 1812. He won significant victories against U.S. forces
but was killed near present-day Thamesville, Ontario, at the
Battle of Thames after a cowardly retreat by the British General
Henry PROCTOR left his flank vulnerable.
