DICKSON/DIXON,
Joyce
Ethel
Joyce DICKSON/DIXON died peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital, Sunday
night, April 23, 2006. Paralyzed on her right side by a stroke,
Joyce spent the last two years at Misericordia Health Centre.
Predeceased in 1981 by her twin sister, Gladys
SIM of Ontario.
Because of her poor eyesight, Joyce went directly to normal school
after graduating from Gordon Bell High School. She began her
teaching career in Dugald, Manitoba and immediately took education
courses by correspondence. Joyce traveled many times to Europe
during the summer holidays, and over the years taught in several
elementary schools in Winnipeg. Her last school was Laura Secord.
During her lifetime she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from
the University of Ottawa, a Bachelor of Education degree from
the University of Manitoba and a Master of Education from the
University of Toronto. After the death of her twin, Joyce took
early retirement. Whenever she was shopping or visiting in different
areas of the city, she was constantly approached by young women
and men, who would rush to speak to her, "Do you remember me?
I was in you Grade 4 class! You were my teacher!" Cards and letters
often came from some of her former pupils and that pleased her
a great deal. Since 1940, Joyce worshipped at First Presbyterian
Church where she made many Friends and experienced a variety
of ministers. Joyce was also a devoted member of the University
Women's Club of Winnipeg where she especially appreciated the
desserts that were served at Drop-In lunches. If any of her Friends
or former pupils would like to do something in her honour, Joyce
makes a special request. No flowers and no gifts to charities.
"What I would really like is that you befriend a youngster or
two in your neighbourhood. Support that child or those children,
remember their birthdays, listen to their stories, get to know
their families, and enjoy the reactions you will receive." Joyce
leaves to mourn her sister Rev. Dr. Irene J.
DICKSON/DIXON; her cousins
Clifford (Marceline)
PESHAL, in Lindsay, Ontario; Grace
SEGERKVIST
in Sault Ste. Marie; and Mavis
WRIGHT

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 26 at 10: 00 a.m.

will be conducted by Joyce's friend, the Reverend Amy
