SAXBERG,
Lorne 48
Canadian Press, Page S8
Veteran Canadian Broadcasting Corporation newsman earned Murrow
award
Veteran
Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation news anchor Lorne
SAXBERG
died Saturday in a snorkelling accident while on vacation in
Phuket, Thailand.
Mr. SAXBERG had a 27-year career with the country's public broadcaster
and was a widely recognized news anchor on both television and
radio. The 48-year-old broadcaster was one of the original anchors
when Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's all-news channel Newsworld
was launched in 1989, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation News
reported.
He was recently awarded an Edward R. Murrow Award for a documentary
he wrote and hosted on the 60th anniversary of the Hiroshima
nuclear bomb.
Mr. SAXBERG grew up in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and graduated from
Confederation College's broadcasting program before joining Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation Radio as an announcer in his hometown.
He later moved to Toronto.
"He was the consummate pro and an exceptional journalist," said
Ken BECKER, a Newsworld producer who worked with Mr.
SAXBERG.
Despite Mr.
SAXBERG's international success as a journalist,
he never strayed far from his northwestern Ontario roots.
With his family, Mr.
SAXBERG bought and restored a 130-year-old
mining shop near his hometown to create the Silver Islet General
Store and Tea Room, where he served as harbour master. He returned
every summer to work at the store.

Clive R.J. (May 29, 1985-October 4, 2000)
In loving and sad memory of our special Clive R.J.
SAXON, who
left without warning, 6 years ago.
Fifteen years were not long enough
For my special boy's life to live.
So many dreams and goals to achieve
And so much love to give.
His friendly face and caring voice,
Made everyone feel special.
Six years ago when I lost my sweet Clive,
My deep sadness only gets stronger
But knowing one day, there will be a way
To be with him forever or longer.
Love Mum.
