Publisher and politician born in London, Ontario, in 1924.
The son of Lebanese immigrants, he attended the University of
Western Ontario. In 1953, he moved to Sarnia, Ontario, to launch
a weekly newspaper, The Sarnia Gazette. In 1966, he decided to
entered local politics and won a seat on city council. In 1980,
he was elected mayor for the first time. He twice won re-election.
A chain-smoking bachelor known for his outspoken style, he was
famous in Sarnia for his defence of the working man and often
argued against tax increases and rate increases. He sold his
newspaper in 1984 and, three years later, was diagnosed with
lung cancer.

spent his early childhood in Argentina and Uruguay and moved
to Canada, with his family, in 1955. He attended Concordia University
in Montreal, studying economics and political science. On graduation
he joined the Royal Bank of Canada and served with distinction
in the international banking field. His long and successful career
took him to a variety of assignments in South America, Europe
and Australia. He retired in 2002, settling in Brazil with his
family. Despite a lengthy illness, he continued to pursue a variety
of interests. He had a long life passion for an eclectic mix
of music, he read extensively and was infinitely interested in
the world around him. He undertook genealogical research, loved
to travel, and enjoyed his garden. Robert cared deeply for his
Friends and family. He was compassionate, witty, generous, intelligent,
always elegant, and kind. He accepted his final illness with
courage and strength and died as he had lived -- a truly gentle
man.

by extended family and Friends in Canada and abroad. Alf's passing
was preceded by several days by the death of his younger brother
Stan in Clacton-on-Sea, England. Alf, a World War 2 Veteran of
the British Armed Forces, immigrated to Canada with his wife
and son in 1953. He built the family home in Highland Creek and
worked as an upholsterer, foreman and production manager at Barrymore
Furniture in Toronto until his retirement in 1981. He was an
avid gardener and a skilled carpenter. His strength, courage,
humour and pragmatism earned the respect of all who knew him.
He was a cherished and constant husband, father and friend who
will be dearly missed. Visitation will take place at Pine Hills
Reception Centre, 625 Birchmount Road, Scarborough, Tuesday,
January 10 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The Funeral Service will be
held at Pine Hills Chapel, Wednesday, January 11 at 1: 30 p.m.

Steeles Ave.). Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, March 21 at Blessed
Trinity Roman Catholic Church (3220 Bayview Ave.). Interment
at Mount Hope Cemetery. If desired, donations made to The Beverly

Predeceased by her sons Eugene (1989) and
Gilbert (2004). Dear grandma of Michael, Karen, Joe, Kelly and
Jimmy and 5 great-grandchildren. Precious grandma to Bryan. Predeceased
by her grand_son Donnie (1988). A private Funeral Mass was held
at Our Lady Chapel, Saint Peter's Basilca on Friday, September 15,
2006. Interment in Saint Peter's Cemetery. 'Eternal Rest grant
unto her, O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon her.'
