Cyclist tumbles to death off bridge
By Oliver MOORE,
Page A3
A cyclist riding on the sidewalk of a tall bridge in Mississauga,
just west of Toronto, lost control of his bike and tumbled over
the railing to his death, police said yesterday.
The lifeless body of Andrzej
SACAWA was found on the banks of
the Credit River, 28 metres below Burnhamthorpe Road. His mountain
bike remained atop the busy bridge, relatively undamaged, and
police are looking for witnesses: to the freak accident.
"Unknown is how he lost control of his bicycle," said Peel Regional
Police media relations officer Peter
BRANDWOOD. "
Somehow he struck
the railing of the bridge."
Burnhamthorpe Road is almost always busy and the sidewalk over
the bridge has been designated a paved bike lane, said cycling
advocate Darren
STEHR.
It's not an approach he approves of.
"We know riding on the sidewalk is dangerous, if you look at
City of Toronto stats we know that's where a lot of accidents
happen," said Mr.
STEHR, speaking on behalf of Advocacy for Respect
for Cyclists.
"This cyclist had two choices, either go over the side of the
bridge or go into traffic, neither is very good."
Mr. SACAWA was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
"It would appear that the guy lost control of the bike, unfortunately,
and the only place he had to fall was over the bridge," Mr.
BRANDWOOD
said.
Southern Ontario was experiencing unseasonably warm temperatures
yesterday, and Mr.
SACAWA was among cyclists across the region
who took the opportunity to stretch their legs.
It is unknown how far Mr.
SACAWA had pedaled before his accident.
But according to CTV News, the father of two lived only a few
kilometres from the scene.
Mr. SACAWA was riding west on the sidewalk on the northern side
of the bridge -- that is, with the flow of traffic -- when the
accident occurred.
The railing he went over stands a bit more than one metre high,
roughly the height of a tall man's waist.

Cyclist falls to death from bridge
By Bob MITCHELL,
Staff
Reporter
A 46-year-old man is dead following a bizarre bicycle accident
on a bridge in Mississauga.
According to witnesses, Andrzej
SACAWA lost control yesterday
morning as he was riding along a sidewalk on a bridge on Burnhamthorpe
Rd. over the Credit River -- and then tumbled over the railing
to his death.
Police said
SACAWA's handlebars somehow became lodged in the
railing as he was riding across the bridge that crosses the Credit
River in the area between Mississauga Rd. and Creditview Rd.
Suddenly, he lost control of his mountain bike, then tumbled
over the handlebars and fell about 28 metres to his death.
A coroner pronounced him dead at the scene, police said.
"The railing is apparently quite low if you're on a bike," Peel
Constable Kathy
WEYLIE said.
Police officials said no other people or vehicles were involved
in the bridge tragedy.
