GILCHRIST,
Christina
Mary
Ferguson
At Toronto, Ontario on December 10, 2006 just fifteen days short
of her eighty-ninth birthday on Christmas Day. Daughter of the
late James
GILCHRIST and Georgina Gordon
GILCHRIST of Toronto.
Dear sister to the late Gordon, Donald (Christiane), Morag and
Jean MATTHEWS.
Beloved aunt of Nancy Ann, Donald (Jeanne) and
Jean GILCHRIST, the late Peter
MATTHEWS (Sharon), Rosalie
RUFELDS
and Christopher
MATTHEWS
(Liz) and great aunt of thirteen nieces
and nephews. Christina attended Harbord Collegiate Institute,
Toronto and then Trinity College, University of Toronto where
she graduated in Classics in 1940. That year she was head of
College at St. Hilda's College and was a member of the University
of Toronto Student Council. Christina subsequently received her
Bachelor of Education and her Master of Education from the University
of Toronto. Christina commenced her high school teaching career
in Ridgetown, Ontario where she taught Latin and Greek. She subsequently
spent most of her 41 years as a teacher in Hamilton, where she
taught at Westdale, Delta and Barton Secondary Schools. As a
specialist Christina taught Classics, Physical Health and Education,
Guidance and Counseling and Commercial, in addition to coaching
many high school sport teams. Her dedication to her profession
and her students was indicated by her absence from work for only
five days in her teaching career, four of them as a result of
a broken leg. Christina loved to travel to all parts of the globe
and to spend time with her nieces and nephews, enduring endless
hours at the card table with them. In recent years the ravages
of Alzheimer's Disease took its toll on Christina's great energy
and memory. The staff at Central Park Lodge, 123 Spadina Road,
Toronto were extremely caring in looking after Christina during
the past five years. Special mention should be made of Carol,
Jannis and Blossom for their total compassion and care for Christina.
A private service and interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery will
take place at a later date.
