POUND, Eva
By Johanna MacDONALD, Page A18
Wife, mother, life enthusiast, intellect, friend to all. Born September 18, 1911, in Saskatoon. Died September 25, 2005, of natural causes, in Vancouver, British Columbia, aged 94.
Eva POUND got great joy out of life. Exclamations such as "Fabulous!" "Gorgeous!" and "This is exciting!" were voiced by Eva with enthusiasm. A week before her death, Eva gave a rousing speech at her 94th birthday party. She thanked those who were celebrating with her including seven children (three by marriage); 12 grandchildren (five by marriage); four great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and scores of close Friends. In her speech, she stated not once, but twice, "What more could someone ask for?"
Eva worked as bookkeeper in her father's office in North Battleford, Saskatchewan., until she was 25 years old when Tom, a banker, came to the office on business. After meeting and courting, Tom asked Eva for her hand in marriage. Eva and Tom had a deep love, and Eva embraced her new life as Eva POUND. She and Tom lived, in Eva's words, an exhilarating family life raising four lively children, and a wonderful retirement in Vancouver enjoying gardens and volunteer work. After Tom passed away 23 years ago, Eva became a natural nighthawk. She can be pictured content at her kitchen table, sipping on a glass of brandy, smoking, reading, and reflecting on the day.
Tall and beautiful, Eva never wore slacks. Her dress code included skirts, sweaters, and high-heeled shoes. I can remember her clicking steps as she walked on the porch of my house when I was growing up... and indeed, by age 90, she had an outstanding collection of high-heels flowing from her closet. It was important to Eva as she grew older, to get up and get dressed. With stockings, skirt, neatly pressed blouse, her hair beautifully swept up into a bun (and the heels), Eva looked like a million bucks every day.
Eva was certain about and triumphed in her many roles in life. As wife, mother, or dedicated treasurer for the Girl Guides of Canada, the one role she may have been the least aware of, she excelled in the most: Eva was, simply, a friend to all. Her children's and grandchildren's Friends were her Friends as were many others with diverse backgrounds. With Eva having lived in four major regions of Canada, we were: enriched by her deep knowledge of social and political life, charmed by her amazing vocabulary and compelled by her contagious curiosity. Eva's being intrigued by and caring about the lives of others was rooted in the joy she found in life around her. She came alive at a party, knew how to "work a room," and was thrilled to engage with everyone she met.
Because Eva had such varied interests, she often surprised us with her animation and knowledge. Her son-in-law John recounts a story about Eva coming to visit his family in Ontario when she was about 80 years of age. Before the trip out, he asked Eva's children if they felt Eva might be interested in going to a Blue Jays baseball game. Eva's children said she most likely did not have a keen sports interest, and the idea was abandoned. John picked Eva up at the airport and they were driving home. He asked her if she minded him listening to the ballgame on the radio. Eva said she wouldn't mind. After a listening to the game for about a minute, Eva said offhandedly, "Hmmm -- that's funny you don't often hear of a curveball on a 3-2 count." She probably wouldn't have minded going to the game, either.
Eva loved celebrating life and didn't like saying goodbye. Determined to live in her home until death, with the loving assistance of Margaret, her daughter and close friend, Eva did just that. She lives on in the eyes and smiles of her children as we celebrate life as she did.
Johanna MacDONALD is Eva POUND's granddaughter.
