KOCK,
Henry -- I Remember
By Linda PIM,
Page
S10
Linda PIM of Inglewood, Ontario, writes about horticulturist
Henry KOCK, whose obituary ran January 21.
Almost every time Henry and his wife
Anne
HANSEN came to visit,
he would bring a plant for our garden, always one he had grown
from seed and usually a native Ontario species. I loved the gentleness
with which Henry's big hands worked around plants and soil. He
often brought a blue-flowering plant - real blue, like the sky
- as he knew that was my favourite.
Henry collected seeds, plant cuttings and whole plants wherever
he could. I remember a trip my partner Paul
AIRD and I made to
Newfoundland in 1999 with Henry and Anne. We were all struck
by the beautiful abundance of a particularly hardy monkshood
in everyone's front gardens - a riot of purple profusion. After
a week as a foursome, Henry and Anne headed off on a sea kayaking
trip while Paul and I continued exploring the Great Northern
Peninsula. Henry had asked me to try to collect some monkshood
plants and bring them home on the plane. I did so, not without
difficulty. Alas, mine died within a year. Henry's are still
thriving in their Guelph garden.
