FOX,
Frank
Arthur -- Dispatch:
By Suzanne
MA,
Page M6
Frank Arthur
FOX loved searching for treasures.
He was born in Clacton-on-Sea, a seaside resort town in Essex,
England. On his 17th birthday, with his parents and two brothers,
Mr. FOX immigrated to Canada. One year later, he met Claudine
O'SHAUGHNESSY -- his most cherished treasure -- on a bus. He
sat down on the empty seat next to her and stayed there past
his own bus stop. In 1957, the two were married. They would have
four children -- Matthew, John, Andrew and Anne -- and five grandchildren.
Mr. FOX ran a building supplies company until 1979, at which
point he decided to turn a hobby into his new business. Having
always loved tinkering with antiques, he and his wife began buying,
repairing and refinishing a host of Canadian treasures.
He was especially fond of collecting Canadian military medals,
insignias and badges. He would also create new items by taking
the sterling silver handles off old knives and using them to
make new objects such as magnifying glasses, letter openers,
key chains and ice-cream scoops.
"They made lovely and unusual gifts," his wife remembers. "He
always liked creating new things."
But what he enjoyed most was the search. "He really liked meeting
the people who were selling the antiques and searching for the
right product," Mrs.
FOX says. "That was the fun part."
He was still finding and fixing treasures a month before he died.
Diagnosed with colorectal and liver cancer two years ago, Mr.
FOX
died at home on June 8 at the age of 71, with his wife and his
daughter by his side.
