Alice, 1995 -- Died This Day
Pioneer pilot born on June 25, 1916, in Toronto.
The youngest of four girls, she was fascinated by aviation. In
1940, she got her pilot's licence and worked as an aircraft inspector
at de Havilland Aircraft. In 1942, she gained her commercial
licence and was hired by the Air Transport Auxiliary to ferry
aircraft from factories to bases. After the Second World War,
she returned to Toronto and bought Aero Activities in 1949. Later,
she moved it to Maple, Ontario, where she ran the operation for
many years. Her last flying job was as an instructor at Buttonville
airport near Toronto. She began to suffer serious memory loss
and could not renew her pilot's licence. She died in a traffic
accident after failing to stop at an intersection.

Born on December 30th, 1942, Michael passed away suddenly on
October 10th 2006. Cherished husband of Barbara and devoted father
of Richard with wife Janice and Julie with husband Cory, beloved
Papa to Dylan and Laura. He also leaves sister Daphne (David)
in Wales, brother John (Margaret) of Calgary, and sisters-in-law
Pat, Linda, Celia, and Vanda all in England, along with many
close Friends and much admired colleagues, each one holding a
special place in his heart. He was raised in Neath, Wales and
educated at Christ College in Brecon, Wales. He joined Lloyds
Bank in 1960 and later Dudley Iron and Steel before immigrating
to Canada in 1973, where the family settled in Calgary. After
a short time with Scotia Bank, he joined Makoi Developments as
Financial Controller where he spent 25 years. In 2000, he took
on exciting new challenges as Vice President and Chief Financial
Officer with SEB Management Corp. in Victoria, British Columbia.
Mike was a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and
an International Accountant. An avid golfer and fisherman, his
most precious time was spent with family. A celebration of his
life will take place at the First Memorial Chapel, 4725 Falaise
Dr., Victoria, British Columbia at 2 p.m. on Tuesday October 17th.
Flowers gratefully declined. A tribute in his name will be accepted
towards a priority item for the Critical Care Unit at the Jubilee
Hospital, for the wonderful care Michael and family received.

Died peacefully at home in Perth, Ontario on November 9th, in
his 98th year. A native of New Ross, Co. Wexford, Ireland, Pat
began his career as an apprentice deck officer with Watts Watts
Steamship Company with which he remained until 1943 when he accepted
employment with the Park Steamship Company. He was one of the
youngest ship masters to be given a command in the British Merchant
Navy. He served throughout the Second World War in the Merchant
Navy and acted as commodore on voyages to Murmansk and Archangel
in Northern Russia to ensure the provision of supplies to the
Soviet people and military. He also served in the campaign to
liberate Italy during the invasion of Sicily. Pat was a long-time
employee of McLean Kennedy Inc., having commenced his career
ashore as marine superintendent in 1944 and retiring as Vice-President
- Operations. He also was intimately involved in the establishment
of the Brunterm Container Terminal in Saint John, New Brunswick
and at the time of his retirement was a Vice-president and director
of Brunterm. Pat will be remembered for his deep commitment to
the Merchant Navy and the steamship industry in general and his
devotion to several charitable organizations, including Mariners'
House of Montreal, the successor of the Catholic Sailors Club,
which he served as President in 1965-67. Pat was predeceased
by his one and only true love to whom he was devoted, Helen Bruce
ORR and will be missed tremendously by his loving children Aidan
(Georgette), Honor, Jeremy (Wendy) and Christopher (Lorraine)
and his adoring grandchildren Samantha, Ashley, Michael and Claire.

wonderful sense of humour. He was born in London, Ontario and
highschooled at Albert College in Belleville. He served in the
Canadian Infantry Corps. His accounting career took him to Hamilton
with the Income Tax Deptarment. Then he worked in Hamilton and
Toronto with Peller, Carling, Canadian and Molson Breweries.
Bruce enjoyed his retirement years by travelling and "tracking"
the old rail lines in Ontario. He loved photography, his model
railway and was a very talented pianist and organist. Cremation
has taken place. Donations can be made to the Stroke Unit at
Trillium Health Centre, 100 Queensway W., Mississauga. Family
and Friends will celebrate his life at a later date.
