'Horrific scene'
Officers say a collision that killed three people on the 401
was one of the worst they'd ever seen.
By John HERBERT, Free Press Reporter, Sat., September 23, 2006
Two veteran police officers say a crash on Highway 401 east of
Woodstock that killed three people on Thursday night was one
of the worst they have ever seen.
"It certainly was a horrific scene," said Const. Dennis
HARWOOD,
a 32-year member of the Ontario Provincial Police.
Sgt. Dave REKTOR said the collision involving three transport
trucks, a sport utility vehicle and a car ranks as one of the
worst he's seen because of the three deaths and the severity
of damage to the vehicles.
"Whenever you see vehicles torn apart like last night, it causes
you to take a step back and ponder about the severity of these
types of crashes," he said yesterday.
The crash at about 10 p.m. in the eastbound lanes four kilometres
east of the Drumbo exit reduced the sport utility vehicle to
a "crumpled ball of metal,"
REKTOR said.
Ontario Provincial Police identified the dead as:
• Lawrence Richard
BYRNE, 28, of R.R.#2, Belle River, the sport
utility vehicle driver.
• Nachtar Singh
CHOHAN, 42, of Quebec, one of the truck drivers.
• Bruno
MAMBELLA, 45, of Kitchener, the car driver.
sport utility vehicle passenger Laura Marie
CAMPBELL, 25, of
Chatham, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Truck drivers Gary
BERENOSE, 63, of Dundas, and Marc
BERNIER,
42, of Quebec, were involved in the pileup, but unhurt, police
said.
Police closed the stretch of Highway 401 until about 10 a.m.
yesterday.
The carnage
HARWOOD and other police and emergency personal witnessed
was difficult to stomach, he said. "There was a very, very sombre
mood among police and emergency people."
HARWOOD would not speculate on whether there would be charges
or on the cause of the crash, adding that would be determined
by the Ontario Provincial Police highway enforcement action team.
Investigators were continuing to evaluate the evidence gathered
from the crash scene and had not determined a cause, he said.
The crash occurred in a construction zone,
HARWOOD said.
Will ROE and Sirous
HOUSHMAND were among the first people to
arrive on the scene.
"We went up to help, but there wasn't much we could do," said
ROE, who was heading to Guelph.
He said the passenger in the sport utility vehicle was waving
her hand for help.
"The lady was alive and talking," he said.
The two men approached the car involved in the crash and found
the driver unconscious. He was travelling alone, police said.
"We tried talking to him," said
HOUSHMAND.
Plattsville, Drumbo and Princeton fire departments responded
to the crash along with Ontario Provincial Police from Brant,
Oxford and Cambridge detachments.
