LEHMAN,
Hugh 1961 -- Died This Day
Athlete born in Pembroke, Ontario, on October 27, 1885.
In the early years of professional hockey, goaltenders weren't
expected to last more than a few seasons. But Hugh
LEHMAN, who
became a net minder in 1906, defied the odds by playing for 22 years.
He first suited up for the Canadian Soo and then moved to British
Columbia to play for teams in the then-robust Pacific Coast Hockey
Association. An aggressive goalie who liked to intimidate his
opponents, he was known for rushing the puck -- occasionally
as far forward of his net as centre ice. In 1915, his fearless
style of playing helped the Vancouver Millionaires win the Stanley
Cup. After the Pacific Coast Hockey Association collapsed in
1926, he joined the Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey
league for two more seasons. He was inducted into the Hockey
Hall of Fame in 1958.
