Homicide ruling worries neighbours

The death of an elderly Saint Thomas man found in his apartment building elevator has been ruled a homicide, shocking other tenants.
Marcel LACHANCE, 77, was found dead Saturday in the Grand Central apartments at 294 Talbot St. Saint Thomas police originally said he may have died of natural causes.
But last night, investigators said the well-liked man -- known for riding on his trademark scooter -- died as a result of foul play.
"It's left the building in a state of shock," said Kay BAKER, 68, who knew LACHANCE to say hello.
"I quiver. I keep my door locked (and) I never used to. I just stay inside here."
LACHANCE lived on the seventh floor of the 12-storey complex attached to another apartment highrise.
Saint Thomas police were called to the building last Saturday after LACHANCE's body was found in the elevator.
One officer at the scene that day told reporters he believed the man died of natural causes. But it was ruled a homicide after a post-mortem at London's University Hospital yesterday.
LACHANCE moved out of the building a few years ago until his wife died, then returned, said Doreen CAIRNS, who also lives on the seventh floor.
She said he was friendly and had no problems with anyone.
"He was a very nice guy," said CAIRNS, 76, who lives with her husband.
"I used to tease him -- I told him he should get a trailer to go behind his scooter so he could give us women a ride.
"(This) is a scary thought, until they find out who did it."
Police are still investigating and issued a statement last night. A spokesperson declined comment.
"Police are reminding citizens… to be mindful of personal security strategies, such as looking doors…" it read.

Man, 60, dies in early morning collision

A Londoner was killed and a veteran trucker badly shaken yesterday in an early-morning crash in Thames Centre that police are investigating.
Joe ANTONIO, 60, was heading to work in Dorchester shortly before 6 a.m. yesterday when his van broadsided a tractor-trailer reversing into a driveway along Westchester Bourne, Middlesex Ontario Provincial Police said. ANTONIO, whose vehicle was trapped under the rig, died at the scene.
"He's a very good brother and a very good father," Adelina ANTONIO said of her brother, who had a 21-year-old stepson and two other children, ages 13 and 10. "We are trying to cope with the loss because it was so sudden."
Skip LACHARITY, the veteran trucker who was backing his tractor-trailer onto his Dorchester-area property, was unhurt in the crash but obviously upset by the tragedy in the pre-dawn darkness.
"I'm not so sure it's sunk in yet," said LACHARITY, 54, who had been delivering flowers to grocers in London and Sarnia. "It was over in a heartbeat. It was a tragic thing."
The 16-metre-long trailer was outfitted with reflective stripes and marker lights, Const. Doug GRAHAM said. It was dark at the time of the collision and investigators were still piecing together how it happened, he added.
ANTONIO had worked at the same Dorchester factory for about 25 years, his sister said, and often pledged to retire within four years.
He moved to Canada from the Philippines in the mid-1970s, she said.

The family of Hieke (Hilda) KIELSTRA are sad to announce her passing on Monday, January 30, 2006. Hieke was in her 74th year and was predeceased by husbands Hank KONING and Peter KIELSTRA, children Nina and Terry KONING and brother Bill TWYNSTRA. She is survived by, and will be sadly missed by son Jeff, Phyllis and Douglas KONING, daughter Patricia, Steve, Peter and Joey LACHOWSKY; and daughter Glenda, Lindsay and Matthew BARENDREGT. She will also be missed by grandchildren Kevin, Ryan and Terry KONING and their mother Eileen and son-in-law Steve BARENDREGT. Hieke will also be sadly missed by her sister Ena KIELSTRA, brothers Rick, Clarence, George and Sid TWYNSTRA, many in-laws, and nieces and nephews. Hieke's life began in Holland in 1932. After the second world war, she was first in her family to immigrate to Canada and by the mid 1950's all of her family had joined her. One of her proudest moments was becoming a Canadian citizen. She spent most of her life in Saint Thomas as a wife and mother, raising a family. As an Registered Nurse Anesthetist, she was employed by the Wilson Nursing Home and the Saint Thomas Psychiatric Hospital where she loved taking care of her patients. Resting at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin Street, Saint Thomas until Friday afternoon and then to the First Christian Reformed Church, Elm Street for funeral service at 1: 00 p.m. Interment to follow in Elmdale Cemetery. Predeceased by her beloved husband and partner of 70 years Irwin Allan LACK. Survived by her loving children Eric M. and Anita, and Daniel Ian as well as her devoted grandchildren Heidi LACK and Michael ZELL of Boston, Wendy of Toronto, Jonathan and Phillipa LACK of London, England and great-grand_sons Joshua Matthew LACK, Myles Benjamin LACK- ZELL as well as great-granddaughters, Stephanie Rachel LACK and Arielle Nina LACK- ZELL. She is also survived by her sisters, Elsie (the late Joe ROSS) and Bertha (the late Joe KRAMER) and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Henry S. (Bud) WEISER, her sisters Paula (the late Jack ROSENBLOOM) and Rachel (the late Samuel MEISTER.) Sister-in-law of Anna SHEREFF (the late Louis,) the late Rosa HAMER (the late Moe,) the late Ethel MYERS (the late Max,) the late David M. LACK, Q.C. (the late Sybil.) Heartfelt thanks to Roxanne and Rosaline for their care and devotion. Born in Montreal on September 16, 1909, she chose to enter the world of business, first with the Dominion Rubber Company, and after her marriage in 1931, along with her husband, the retail trade, where she was active for more than twenty years. Rheva was a golfer at the Hillsdale Golf and Country Club of which she was one of the earliest women members and also joined with her husband on many of his numerous fishing trips. She was an amateur painter, who participated for several years in the organization of the annual N.D.G. Arts and Letters Festival. Some of her charitable activities included the Ethel Epstein Ein chapter of Hadassah on whose behalf she edited the Shavuot Chapter of the cookbook entitled "A Treasure For My Daughter" which was first published in 1950 and continued through its tenth printing in 1984, and has now been re-issued. She was also for a number of years the Secretary of the Hampstead Chapter of O.R.T. Her guidance, and above all her philosophical attitude toward life will be missed, but remembered. She was a woman of style and dignity, with the discipline to maintain both. Evelyn is survived by her husband Kenneth; and children Marilyn (Ron) WAYE, Kathleen (Robert) ROSE, Mary (Larry) LACOMBE, and Ian McPHEE; ten grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Ralph (Betty) BEATTIE and Don (Shirley) BEATTIE. Predeceased by her daughter-in-law Brenda (née DERBECKER) McPHEE; and brother Jack (Evelyn) BEATTIE. Loving aunt of Carroll LOEVEN and her husband Harry, Wilma WOOD and her husband Henry and Mary PURDY and her husband Milford. Great aunt of David LOEVEN, Gordon LOEVEN (Patricia), Paul LOEVEN (Jennifer), Janice (WOOD) LACROIX and her husband Dr. Thomas LACROIX, Ian WOOD (Peggy), Timothy PURDY (Lisa), Robert PURDY and Stephanie (PURDY) HOPKO and her husband Michael. Passed away peacefully at age 60, on December 31, 2005 with his family at his side. Dearest son of the late Charles and Elsie LACY. Much loved brother of Larry and his wife Barbara. Doug led a simple and happy life, meeting both his mental and physical challenges with great determination.
