LECHTZIER, Merton Richard
The only son of Samuel and Susan was born on November 12, 1925 in Minneapolis and lived briefly there and in Winnipeg before finally settling in Vancouver in 1927. Sam was one of 11 children of Abraham and Doba LECHTZIER who immigrated to Winnipeg from Russia in 1882. Rhoda, their eldest daughter, was the first surviving Jewish child to be born in Western Canada. Merton died at home on December 7, 2006. He was 81. Merton attended Point Grey, Magee high schools and University of British Columbia where he received a B.Com. Upon graduation, Merton joined his father at the family business, LaSalle Recreations, remaining there until his father's death in 1972. During the 30s, 40s and 50s, LaSalle outfitted theatres with chairs and carpet, and was a very popular social spot in Vancouver's early history. It housed on five floors 10 pin bowling (then the largest of its kind in North America), the only indoor golf course in the country, and a pool hall incorporated within The Young Italian Men's Club. Merton later converted LaSalle into a successful carpeting and interior decorating business. He was a leader in his field for many years. Merton had lifelong sartorial interests. He loved fashion and considered himself an authority on good taste and grooming. To him, the only thing better than the latest fashion was the same thing at half price. Away from the office 'Mert' was a consummate competitor and athlete. He played lacrosse and later basketball for University of British Columbia and had a life long passion for tennis (he was the longest serving member of the Vancouver Lawn Tennis Club). He loved playing cards and was a frequent visitor to Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas in its heyday in the 70's. The Western world has also lost one of the best crib players in his passing which he pursed with great verve. Mert was also an enthusiastic investor and speculator enjoyed following the stock market. He was one of Howe Street's earliest followers and rode the waves though many cycles. Beyond everything else, however, Merton was a family man, very private and happiest at home and among the familiar, a creature of routine and tradition, and was absolutely and unequivocally devoted to his family and particularly his dear wife of 53 years, Bette (née HEARD,) whom he married on August 12, 1953. They soon moved to Shaughnessy where they remained under the same roof for over 40 years. Mert and Beebz enjoyed hosting parties and travelling to exotic locales with their many close life long Friends. Merton was intelligent, compassionate, opinionated, argumentative, generous, a lousy driver (but "the world's best parker"), incredibly stubborn, forever impatient and possessed a wicked sense of humour. Above all else, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather. In 2000, when his dear Bette was afflicted with dementia, Merton totally and absolutely devoted his entire existence to Bette's welfare, forsaking everything to that cause. While it is always a tragedy to lose a father and a friend, it is particularly difficult to lose Dad at Christmas as he eagerly anticipated the occasion and kept the spirit of the season throughout the year. He will be very sadly missed and like all special things in life, was unique and irreplaceable. Merton is survived by his beloved wife Bette, his three children; Matthew of London, England, Paul (Jennifer DOLMAN) of Toronto, and Sally (Jeffrey RUTLEDGE) of Vancouver, and six grandchildren; Sam, Adam and Emma RUTLEDGE and Harris, Sasha and Abby LECHTZIER, as well as his sister Donna KORENS of MacLean, Virginia. The family thanks the Pacific Spirit Community Health Centre and particularly Sally Hill who walked on water in Dad's eyes and whose care and concern were so appreciated. In addition, we thank Helen Combs for her loving attention to both our parents over the last few years. Donations to the Canadian Cancer or Alzheimer Societies would be appreciated.

Loving father to Lynn JOHNS of London and Dede JOHNS of British Columbia. Dear grandfather of Joleane JOHNS of London. Survived by his brother Harry, his nieces Bonnie and Debbie. Predeceased by one sister Ann, four brothers Nick, Mike, John and William. son of the late Mary and Alex KORTELLO. I have known you from birth as well as my daughter, step-father is only a word, I've always felt of you as my father for you were more of a father to me than some dads will ever be. Joleane has been blessed to have you as a grandfather. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. The three of us will reunite in Heaven. It is with great sadness that the family announce the peaceful passing of Lucia on Saturday, December 31, 2005 at St. Michael's Hospital at the age of 47 years. Her memory will be cherished by her parents Anthony and Lucia. She will be sadly missed by her sisters Mary-Anna and her husband David, Annette and her husband Paul, brothers Anthony and his wife Angela, Jef and his wife Monique, Philip and his wife Heather and by her dear friend Carol. Her many nieces and nephews will remember her with great fondness. I heard the voice of Jesus say, Come unto me and rest. Our beloved Mom, Oma and Great-Oma entered into that eternal rest at the Saint Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Sunday December 3, in her 91st year. Born in Zeeland, The Netherlands on November 3, 1916, she was daughter of the late Adrianna Marina GEELHOEDT and Hendrik Johannes HOEBË. She will be lovingly remembered and sorely missed by her children Ann WESTENDORP and her husband Herman of Cayuga Audrey HULST and her husband Rinus of Saint Thomas; Andries "Andy" and his wife Lynn of Cambridge; Hendrik "Henk" and his wife Thea of Union; Dianne PYPER and her husband Tom of Woodslee; John and his wife Lisa of Sioux Center, Iowa; and Peter and his wife Gwen of Port Stanley. Also sadly missed by 26 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, one sister and 3 sisters-in-law in The Netheralands and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 62 years, Andy (2001), one son Dingeman Adriaan (1956), one sister and one brother in The Netherlands. The family will receive Friends at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin Street, Saint Thomas, on Tuesday December 5 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral will be conducted at the Bethel United Reformed Church, 49823 Talbot Line, Highway 3 East, Aylmer, on Wednesday December 6 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Al KORVEMAKER officiating with interment in Elmdale Cemetery, Saint Thomas. Special thanks and appreciation to The Saint Thomas Elgin General Hospital Fifth Floor staff, as well as Palliative Care staff. Flowers gratefully declined, with remembrances to the Providence Reformed Collegiate Institute, Komoka or the Rehoboth Home, Springfield.
