DOUGLAS/DOUGLASS, Kathleen Joan (formerly HORNE, née HALLOWELL)
Peacefully at her home in Belleville, in her 75th year. Daughter of the late Reverend Carew HALLOWELL and the late Francis Mary HALLOWELL (née BROWNLEE.) Survived by her husband, Dr. Kenneth DOUGLAS/DOUGLASS her three children, Cynthia TAILOR/TAYLOR, David HORNE (Adriana,) and Robert HORNE (Michelle;) five grandchildren, Emily, Alexandra, Melissa, Kayla, and James; sister Mary McLARTY (Tom) of London, Ontario, and brother Bob HALLOWELL (Joyce) of Comox, British Columbia. Joan was a Registered Nurse and graduate (1954) of the Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario, when she married the late Dr. Stewart Douglas HORNE (Belleville and Guelph.) In their 31 years together, they raised three children, Cynthia, David and Robert. A wonderfully loving mother, she infused in her children a love of music, laughter, and a positive outlook on life. After her children were grown, Joan continued her care for others by recertifying as a Registered Nurse and working at the Homewood Health Care Centre and Lapointe-Fisher Nursing Home in Guelph, Ontario. She was loved by those with whom she worked and cared for. In 1989, Joan was remarried to Dr. Kenneth M. DOUGLAS/DOUGLASS (Belleville.) In Ken, she found a friend and companion with whom she shared many interests. They enjoyed 17 happy years together sailing on their yacht, "Reflection," travelling the world and sharing their love of classical music and Christian faith. Joan's love of cottaging was fostered during her childhood summers at Bayfield, on Lake Huron. She brought this love to her family and had wonderful memories on both Steenburg and Limerick Lakes. In 1987 she acquired "a piece of Heaven" on Limerick Lake. This was her legacy, for nothing made Joan happier than to spend time with her husband, children and five grandchildren. She will be remembered for her playful sense of humour, unconditional love, inner strength, grace, beauty and quiet dignity. Joan's family wish to commend the outstanding and compassionate care given by Dr. R. LEVESQUE and the Belleville General Hospital oncology nurses, Dr. Ruth MATHIESON, Dr. Katherine ALLEN, Victorian Order of Nurses nurses Carol and Anne, and Red Cross worker Jolanta. The outpouring of love and support from Friends has also comforted us, and we thank in particular the Reverend Peter JOYCE, for whose spiritual guidance, gentle human touch and faith we will be forever grateful Saint Thomas' Anglican Church and its parishioners; Dr. and Mrs. Robert VAUGHAN, who opened their home and hearts to us; Dr. and Mrs. Bill BRUMMITT for their food and fellowship; Dr. Bob and Nancy ELGIE; Mr. and Mrs. Myles MORTON; Jane and Rick SPRAGUE and the many, many others who called, visited, sent flowers, food and prayers. The family will receive Friends at the Burke Funeral Home (613 968-6968), 150 Church Street Belleville on Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral will take place at Saint Thomas' Anglican Church (corner of Bridge and Church St. Belleville) on Saturday, January 14, 2006 at 3: 00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully acknowledges donations to the Canadian Cancer Society in support of Colon Cancer Research. HOWARD, J.F., Q.C.
On Saturday, June 3, 2006 Jake died at home surrounded by his family and Friends, having lived a full and accomplished life full of love, laughter and with almost all of his ambitions and wishes fulfilled. He will be sorely missed by his wife of 55 years, Nancy, his children, their spouses and grandchildren, Gillian Peter and Leslie; Ian, Robin, Christopher, Daniel and Rachael and Margot, Peter, Jake and Anne. All of the family always felt his love, support and delight in their successes and sought his wisdom and gentle counsel when things went awry. After serving in Canada's navy Jake graduated with a B.Comm. from the University of Toronto and then from Osgoode Hall. Jake was a partner at Blake, Cassels and Graydon LLP, where he began his practice of law in 1953. He was called to the Bar in Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Alberta and was named Queen's Counsel in 1966. His practice was commercial litigation before all levels of all courts and he participated in numerous special inquiries and administrative tribunals. He was a member of the Advocates Society, a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and the first recipient of the Douglas K. Laidlaw Medal for Outstanding Advocacy in 1990. He was known for his ability to analyze cases quickly and completely and was a confident and accomplished advocate. He was also a natural teacher and a mentor to many young lawyers, both in his firm and throughout the profession. When Jake reduced his legal practice, he was appointed a Commissioner of the Ontario Securities Commission where he gladly contributed his wisdom and experience. Jake was an exceptional athlete being an accomplished skier, fly fisher, golfer, sailor and horseman, the latter being an interest which would occupy an important place in his later years. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Woodbine Entertainment Group from the mid-eighties, having served as Chair and then Honourary Chair at Woodbine where he was deeply respected for his work that ensured thoroughbred and harness racing in the Province of Ontario continued to thrive. Winning a major stakes race at Woodbine remains an unfulfilled wish, but perhaps that's yet to come. The family would like to express their deepest thanks to all of the health care professionals who cared for Jake and made it possible for him to enjoy life and then to die at home, as he wished. Particular thanks to Doctor Vincent MAIDA and Kim JOYCE for all of their support at home and to Doctor Pauline PARISER, a wise, wonderful and caring family physician. We would also like to thank Judy TUTTY, Jake's 'right hand' of so many years and his Friends John S. BURNS, Alan CAVENAGH, John R. EVANS, Donald ROSS, and David WILLMOT who provided love and support throughout his illness. Woodbine Racetrack is the location chosen for a celebration of Jake's life where Friends and family will gather on June 23 in the Northern Dancer Room from 3: 30 p.m. to 5: 30 p.m., share memories of Jake, and perhaps participate in the sport he loved. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation (www.pmhf.ca) would be appreciated by the family.
