Police looking for Friends of slain teen
Not sure what weapon was used
Boy found stabbed on Oshawa street
By Stan JOSEY,
Staff▼
Reporter▼
Police are trying to trace the final hours of a 15-year-old Oshawa
boy found slain in a downtown parking lot Saturday evening.
Durham Region detectives also are trying to locate Friends of
Jeremy BENNETT, who died of several stab wounds, said Det. Sgt.
Rolf KLUEM, who heads the homicide unit.
"We still don't know what the weapon was or the reason for this
tragedy," KLUEM said yesterday.
The boy's family are taking his death "quite hard" and do not
want to make any public statements at this time, he said.
"I think we are all working hard towards the same goal of solving
this before someone else possibly gets hurt,"
KLUEM said.
The youth lived with his mother in a north Oshawa co-operative
housing project, but was found dead about seven kilometres south
in the parking lot of a medical centre at Simcoe and Gibb Sts.
Neighbours in the south Oshawa community expressed shock that
the young man apparently was left to die where he fell.
"No one deserves to die like that," said one man who would not
give his name.
Police are canvassing Oshawa's downtown area, which has a significant
population of migrant and homeless youth.
A post-mortem examination Sunday showed he died of several "sharp
force trauma" wounds, similar to stab wounds.

Man, 39, charged in wife's death
Body found in Markham garage
In Brampton, man shot and killed
By Stan JOSEY,
Staff▲▼
Reporter▲▼
Police in Peel and York regions are investigating two homicides
over the weekend.
In York, police have charged a Markham man after his wife's body
was found in the garage of their home on Kruger Rd. shortly after
9 a.m. Saturday.
Sugirthanraj
KAILAYAPILLAI, 39, is charged with second-degree
murder in the death of his wife, Thayalini
SUBRAMANIAM, 31.
An autopsy is being held today to determine the cause of death.
In Peel, Mervyn
SPENCE, 41, of Brampton was gunned down as he
left a private event at a restaurant, in an industrial plaza
at Steeles Ave E. and Torbram Rd., around 4 a.m. Saturday.
Crime-scene tape was still in place around about a dozen stores
in the plaza yesterday as police tried to reconstruct the bloody
path that led from the Malibu Marie lounge to a nearby parking
lot, where the man was found in a pool of blood.
A large number of people attended the event, but so far police
have not come up with a motive for the shooting, which took place
as the party was ending.
They have not ruled out the possibility that
SPENCE was shot
several times while trying to run to safety.
Police want to talk to anyone at the party who can shed some
light on the shooting.

Mother of 4 mourned
Richmond Hill man in custody, charged with impaired driving
By Stan JOSEY,
Staff▲
Reporter▲
As soon as Gareth
CALLAWAY heard that his wife
Terri had been
killed by an alleged drunk driver while jogging in Richmond Hill
Wednesday evening, he gave police a photograph of their four
young children to give to the driver "when he sobers up.
"He'll see a picture of four kids with no mother today and I
want him to see that every day for the rest of his life,"
CALLAWAY
told a reporter outside his upscale Oak Ridges home last night.
He invited anyone else contemplating drinking and driving over
the holiday season to attend his wife's funeral Monday.
"He has ruined one life and did a lot of damage to me and our
children," said
CALLAWAY, remarkably controlling his emotions
while Friends dropped off food and remembrances at the family
home on Queensborough Court near Lake Wilcox.
Terri CALLAWAY, 37, was killed instantly when a station wagon,
believed to be travelling at a high rate of speed, mounted a
curb and struck her on the sidewalk of North Lake Rd., not far
from her residence, on a route that she regularly used for jogging.
Her husband said most nights she went for a jog after their children,
aged 9, 8, 6 and 3, went to bed.
She left the home around 8: 30 p.m. and it wasn't long after that
he saw flashing emergency lights from his rear window, on the
next street south, near Yonge St. and King Rd.
"I knew my wife was out running, so I went to investigate," he
said.
Police kept him away from the scene and then escorted him home
after determining the woman, who was not carrying identification
in her jogging clothes, likely was his wife.
Police arrested a man at the scene and charged him with impaired
driving causing death, criminal negligence causing death and
dangerous driving causing death.
Matthew JUNKERT, 33, of Richmond Hill, appeared in Newmarket
bail court yesterday afternoon. He said nothing as a justice
of the peace remanded him in custody until Monday for a bail
hearing.
CALLAWAY, who operates his own personnel recruiting business,
said his wife was a "phenomenal mother, a phenomenal wife and
a tremendously warm person. Her legacy will be the four children
she has left behind."
He said he intends to buy a burial plot so the children have
a place to go to remember their mother when they get older.
Arrangements for a funeral to be held Monday had not been completed
last night.
