Teen skier's death a mystery
By Hilda HOY,
Staff▲
Reporter▲
One week ago, 14-year-old Joshua
MAZZA was whizzing down the
hills at Blue Mountain, propelling his school's alpine ski team
to a fifth-place giant slalom finish at the Ontario Federation
of School Athletic Associations championships.
Yesterday morning, the Etobicoke teen was found crumpled in the
snow on a downhill run at a ski club near Collingwood. He was
pronounced dead at a local hospital a short time later.
"They don't know what happened," his mother Lori
MAZZA said tearfully
from their home yesterday afternoon. "He was (skiing) with his
Friends and he went over the crest of the hill, and when they
saw him again, he was just lying in the snow."
An X-ray showed that Joshua hadn't suffered a broken neck, she
said. The family hopes an autopsy scheduled for today will shed
some light on what happened.
"He wasn't a risk-taker. He was very in control and he was a
very good skier."
The weather yesterday was clear and sunny and the snow on the
"Long John" run freshly groomed.
Joshua loved to ski so much, he'd headed for the hills almost
every weekend for the past several months, his mother said. He
often skied at the Beaver Valley Ski Club, where he died yesterday,
because his father owned a home nearby.
Last Tuesday,
MAZZA took the day off work to watch him race in
the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championships
at Blue Mountain. "Little did I know…," she said, before choking
up and becoming unable to finish.
Joshua was, in every way, "an awesome kid," she said, a well-loved
student at Etobicoke's Michael Power/St. Joseph High School.
He loved sports but also excelled in academics, finishing his
last year of school as class valedictorian.
"Every adult I know tells me what a wonderful kid he is. Everybody
loved him. He was the best, and I'm not just saying that because
I'm his mother. He really was."
The ski run was closed immediately after the accident and the
Ontario Provincial Police called in a reconstruction expert to
examine the scene.
The family is planning a funeral for Joshua later this week.

Woman charged in axe killing
Victim died from blow to the head
By Moira WELSH,
Staff
Reporter
As a special constable for GO Transit, Dennis
HOY spent his
days collecting tickets on trains and keeping order when trouble
broke out.
HOY, 36, died early Friday morning when he was hit on the head
with an axe while visiting his girlfriend's apartment on The
Queensway, near Royal York Rd.
A 22-year-old woman, who rented a room in the apartment, has
been charged in his death.
Neighbours said they often saw
HOY's girlfriend and the woman
walking cocker spaniels along The Queensway. The two women appeared
to be very close, they said.
Toronto
Homicide detective Bill
VIEIRA said
HOY was a frequent
visitor to the apartment, adding police are still trying to determine
the nature of the relationships among the trio.
"The circumstances of these three individuals are going to play
an important role in the trial and are certainly going to become
part of the evidence as it comes to trial," he said.
Neighbours, however, said
HOY had been involved in a long-term
relationship with one of the women, who they said was named Nicky.
One woman said Nicky rented out her extra bedrooms to a series
of people over the years, leading to numerous disturbances and
calls to police."
The apartment is above a coin laundromat, and two stores down
from Anna MILONE's beauty shop, Empire Spa.
Nicky was a frequent customer,
MILONE said. "It is just unbelievable,
that this happened right here."
She said one of the neighbours heard shouting from the apartment
shortly after midnight.
VIEIRA said yesterday that the autopsy showed
HOY died from "blunt
impact trauma" to his head.
Ashleigh PECHALUK has been charged with second-degree murder.
