Road's collapse blamed in deadly crane rollover
By John HERBERT, Free Press Reporter, Wed., January 25, 2006
A county road near Port Burwell collapsed under a heavy crane, causing it to roll into a ditch, killing its operator, Ontario's Labour Ministry has confirmed.
Michael HIPSON, 42, died in the mishap Monday on Glen Erie Line.
The Ajax man, married with two children, had worked for Cooper's Crane Rental for about three years.
The Toronto-based crane company is involved in the Erie Shores Wind Farm project in Port Burwell.
Glen Erie Line is heavily travelled by vehicles involved in the project, which began last summer.
Ontario Provincial Police said the 81-tonne crane was left partially submerged in water in the incident, which took place between Teal Neville and Stafford roads.
HIPSON was removed when the machine was pulled up a steep embankment about two hours later.
Ontario Provincial Police Const. Michelle SCOTT said police don't know if HIPSON died from injuries from the crash or if he drowned when the cab filled with water.
Allison CROSETT, duty manager with Elgin Emergency Medical Service, said it took about two hours to pull HIPSON from the wreckage because the first crane to arrive on the scene became bogged down when another portion of Glen Erie Line collapsed.
