--In memory of my beloved mother, Evelyn
McIVOR, who left this world suddenly on December 17, 1991.
At the opening of the buds
And the rebirth of the spring
At the blueness of the skies
And in the warmth of summer
At the rustling of the leaves
And in the beauty of the autumn
At the blowing of the wind
And the chill of winter
I remember you.
Always loved and sadly missed, your daughter, Betty

Far in heaven up above,
I know you are watching me with love,
Each twinkling star I see at night
Seems to tell me you're alright.
You left me, but with special things
Called wonderful memories
Which your life did bring
These I will cherish, they will not go away,
Because you're still with me
In so many ways.

First gun death of 2006 comes early
A 21-year-old North York man was shot in his car early yesterday
morning.
By Kim BRADLEY,
Special To
The
Free Press, Mon., January 2, 2006
Toronto -- Not more than five hours after ringing in the new
year, a 21-year-old man was gunned down in the driver's seat
of his Cadillac DeVille yesterday.
Dillan Yhanike
ANDERSON of North York was pronounced dead at
Sunnybrook hospital after he was found slumped over in the driver's
seat of his car in an alley at Eglinton and Locksley avenues,
east of Dufferin Street, around 5 a.m.
"Here we are just into 2006 and already there is another mother
planning to bury her son," said homicide Det. Steve
RYAN. "
It's
sad. It's the first homicide of the year and we have a long year
ahead of us. I'd like to get it solved quickly."
Residents expressed concern that Toronto's rash of gun violence
from last year has spilled over into 2006 and their neighbourhood.
"It's ridiculous," said Maria
HERRETT who, after celebrating
New Year's Eve at Nathan Phillips Square, slept through the gunshots
fired below her apartment window.
"It's getting to the point where you can't even walk down the
street," she said, adding she first started noticing the escalating
crime of 2005 after Jamal
HEMMINGS, 17, was shot November 9 at
Eglinton and Marlee avenues, not far from yesterday's murder.
"I was scared to take my (eight-year-old) daughter downtown for
New Year's,"
HERRETT said. "Everyone's talking tough, but what
is really being done?"
At the New Year's Day levee, Mayor David
MILLER said he was disappointed
to learn of yesterday's murder.
"Every shooting fills me with sadness and this one again appears
to be connected to the gang and the gun trade. It tells me that
the things we're doing are the right things -- we just have to
get them moving."
RYAN said police believe whoever shot
ANDERSON walked over to
the car and opened fire.
He couldn't say how many times
ANDERSON was hit until after today's
autopsy.
The car's driver's side window was shattered and there was a
bullet hole in the windshield.
"I think someone approached the vehicle and shots were fired
from outside the car,"
RYAN said.
Forensic officers spent most of yesterday sifting through the
snow around the car, looking for bullet casings. At one point
they called in a steam truck to melt the snow around the car.
Police are looking to talk to anyone with information about
ANDERSON's
movements before he was shot.
ANDERSON was known to police. In 2003
ANDERSON and a 17-year-old
were arrested in connection with the robbery and shooting of
a man near Jane Street and Wilson Avenue. The victim in that
case survived.
Last year Toronto had 78 murders, 52 involving shootings. The
city didn't record its first murder in 2005 until January 14.
