HEDLEY,
Harold
Whitfield, B.A., B.Paed, D.Paed
It is with sadness that the family of Harold Whitfield
HEDLEY
announces his death at the age of 95 on May 14th, 2006 at Woodstock
General Hospital. Harold and his late wife Emmeline, who died
in August 1999 after almost 60 years of married life, had resided
in Woodstock, Ontario, since 1958 when he assumed the job of
Superintendent of Elementary Education for Oxford County. Born
in Nicola, British Columbia in 1910, Harold
HEDLEY was the son
of Rev. John and Lillian
HEDLEY, the middle child between Grace
and Margaret, both of whom are predeceased. Their family followed
the various ministerial charges through British Columbia, and
then to Ontario, to Nilestown, Lambeth, Byron, Goderich and Essex.
After a brief period in the Imperial Bank, he attended London
Normal School to train as a teacher, moving via Windsor to Toronto
to take up teaching positions, where he worked his way through
many elementary schools over the next 20 years. Along the way,
his travels would take him through Europe, escaping Spain just
ahead of the Spanish Civil War; the travel bug being a feature
of long lived later years with Emmeline, whom he met while teaching
at John Wanless School in North Toronto in the 30's. Harold's
teaching always left a mark with his students, some of whom have
gathered over the years with him in reunions. One, the wellknown
author and artist, the late James Houston, would credit Harold
HEDLEY in book dedications with his artistic inspiration developed
from the weekend trips he and his classmates would make to the
Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and to every
other attraction where living art and nature could be appreciated.
Following his service in the Canadian Army during World War 2,
Harold and Emmeline settled into marriage and children; even
doing a sabbatical to England in 1952-53 to teach, and with their
three children in tow, and their Ford car, touring still war
ravaged Europe. Always the student, Harold
HEDLEY worked after
hours to obtain his B.A. in 1938 from the University of Western
Ontario, a B.Paed. in 1942, and in 1949, his Doctor of Pedagogy
from the University of Toronto. This passion for learning continued
throughout his life. He had attended his regular 'learning Unlimited'
lecture just weeks before his death. Industrious to the core,
in the summers of 1948 and 1949 Harold built the family cottage
by hand on an island in Georgian Bay, a place today that still
stands tribute to his creativeness, that acts as a yearly magnet
to his far-flung family. It was there he suffered a stroke, while
diving for his glasses dropped overboard at Cognashene's Church
on the Rocks, a nearby summer cottage church he helped establish,
even preaching at - a church that continues to this day. The
stroke in 1975 required Harold to learn over again the fundamentals
of speaking; but overcome he did, to continue to lead an active
and productive life for 3 more decades. Living in his own house,
a beautiful 1846 large brick home in Woodstock until a few weeks
before his death, he has been a member and weekly attendee at
Chalmers United Church, from which the memorial service will
be conducted. Harold
HEDLEY is survived by four children, Adrienne
ALLISON of Washington, D.C., Harriet
WALKER
(Gordon) of Toronto,
Kipling HEDLEY of Nootka Lightstation, British Columbia and Franklin
HEDLEY
(Teresa) of Courtenay, British Columbia and grandchildren,

of Toronto, Melanie of Paris, France, Blair of Nanaimo, British

and great grandchildren, Charlotte, Solveig and Maxmillian of
London, United Kingdom, and Aiden of Sitka, Alaska. He will be
buried at Canton Cemetery, near Port Hope beside his beloved
Emmeline. A celebration of his long and active life will be held
at Chalmers United Church, 15 Vansittart Avenue, Woodstock on
Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006 at 3: 00 p.m., followed by a reception
at his home. Memorial donations may be made to Cognashene Community
