Hugh,▼ P.Eng.
Passed away peacefully in his 87th year with his beloved wife
of 64 years Mabel by his side on March 7th, 2006. Born in Victoria,
British Columbia, Doug graduated from the University of Toronto
in 1950 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation
he joined Ontario Hydro where he managed the construction equipment
fleet. He served as Chairman of the Canadian Standards Association
Committee on Mobile Cranes and taught at the University of Waterloo.
His interest in construction safety led to his involvement in
the Training Institute for Operating Engineers of Ontario and
he acted as a consultant on craning for the provincial government
in various capacities. He was the author of two books; one on
construction equipment management and one on craning principles
published by the University of Waterloo and was the chief contributor

in the Construction Industry in Ontario and an award is given
in his name annually at the Institute for Operating Engineers.
A master gardener, he founded the Mississauga Garden Council
in 1986 with the dream that eventually a public garden would
be founded in Mississauga. This dream was realized with the establishment
of the Garden Park at Riverwood and
in July 2005 Doug was recognized
for his contributions with the dedication of the Sundial Garden
in his name. Doug is survived by his wife Mabel; his son and
daughter Ian and Janet
