KAPASI,
Malik
Hassanali
Gower
By Sarah GOWER and Peter
GOWER,
Page

Inspiration. Born June 7, 2004, in Ottawa. Died November 7, 2005,
in Kingston, Ontario, of complications from leukemia (Acute Myeloblastic
Leukemia), aged 17 months.
We welcomed Malik Hassanali Gower
KAPASI on a Monday, a beautiful
sunny late spring day in Ottawa. In the first part of his life
he lived in several places before Bancroft, Ontario, as he followed
his parents on their family-medicine locums. He was a well-experienced
West Jet Cadet. At two months he liked floating in warm-water
pools. He took his first canoe trip at four months. Six months
found him out on Quebec ski trails, and watching a children's
pageant in St. George's Cathedral, as he chewed on the altar
rail. At 10 months he was delighted to watch a moose walk across
the front lawn of the house.
The second part of his life started when he could not throw off
a cold. He began Victoria Day in Bancroft, went on to Belleville,
and came by ambulance to Kingston General Hospital. One week
later, at 11½ months, he was diagnosed with leukemia (Acute Myeloblastic
Leukemia). He rarely complained at the many procedures that were
carried out on him. He loved to tell you where his eyes, nose
and tummy were, but didn't like to tell you about his ears because
someone might want to look in them. He happily crawled around
with intravenous lines attached. He ignored the central line
in his chest. He let everybody know where his shoes were, in
the hope that they might take him out. He knew which of the four
purple hippos was Mr. Hippo, and which were mere substitutes.
Mr. Hippo now rests with him.
He was generous with his food. He would be overcome with excitement
when one of his parents returned from work, and would start handing
them food from his highchair tray in welcome. During quiet times
with his tearful Mom, he would carefully choose his best grape
or pea and offer it to her as a little cheer-up gift. Once, in
his stroller, he spotted a cat and, much to its bemusement, he
excitedly offered it his half-eaten baby carrot. He loved feeding
the sparrows and the seagulls outside the hospital's pediatric
wing.
He also became one of the best non-verbal communicators we have
ever met. His emphatic "No, thanks" head shaking was just as
clear as his happy "Yes, please!" full-body bouncing. Two big
brown eyes would speak volumes of pleasure, concern or sleepiness.
His trust was absolute, and as long as someone he loved was there
to tell him all was okay, he believed, taking the next challenge
in stride.
He taught us so much about dealing with adversity. When he felt
tired, he cuddled quietly or slept. When he felt energetic, he
crawled, and read books, and stacked things and explored with
the exuberance of any toddler. He never felt sorry for himself,
and in turn we could not feel sorry for ourselves. His days with
us were true gifts.
We don't know what his aspirations were, nor his potential. He
was loved by all of us who watched him fight and suffer and recover
and try again and smile and giggle and hold up his arms in welcome.
He drew together two families living on five continents, Sarah
and Hassan's Friends and co-workers, neighbours, and the Kingston
General Hospital skilled medical and support staff. He is missed
by all, and by a Dalmatian who wonders why her favourite smell
visits no more.
And at the end he lay in his hospital bed and listened through
the evening as his parents spoke about his life. Then, on another
Monday, just before midnight, our 17-month-old left us.
The next day we said goodbye to Malik, on a beautiful sunny fall
afternoon in Kingston, with the sun setting, his sparrows singing
and the geese flying south.
Sarah is Malik's mother; Peter is his grandfather.
