EBY,
Herbert▲

Herbert Clifton
EBY of Feversham passed away in Grey Bruce Regional
Health Centre on January 7, 2006 in his 90th year.
Herb was born in Elsinor, Ontario on August 8, 1916, the son
of the late Gideon and Georgina
EBY. In 1926 the
EBY's left the
farm at Elsinor and moved to Feversham and purchased what was
to become known as "Eby's Store".
Herb aftended public and continuation school in Feversham and
in 1936 he married Madge
DAVIDSON.
The young couple resided in
the apartment above the family store and Herb worked for his
father. In 1937 their son Stephen was born and shortly thereafter,
Herb, Madge and baby moved to Barrie where he worked at a hardware
store and drove a taxi.
In 1946 they returned to Feversham to take over the general store
as the elder
EBY's moved to Walters Falls. In 1950 their daughter,
Sally May, was born. Herb purchased an insurance business from
Norman HARRIS and for the next 15 years he and Madge operated
the store and the insurance business.
Herb was an active member of many community organizations and
as many of his generation was involved in getting what is now
known as the "old community centre" established. He enjoyed many
years in the bowling league there. The church was an important
part of the
EBY's life and for 40 years Herb was an Elder at
Burns' Presbyterian Church in Feversham.
1986 was a landmark year for the
EBY's as they celebrated 40
years of operating the store, their 50th wedding anniversary
and made the decision to sell the store and retire to the home
they purchased in the village.
Left to mourn his passing are Madge, his wife of 69 years, son
Steve, daughter Sally, son-in-law John
HOOD, grand_son Kevin
HOOD,
sisters Marguerite
FORSYTH and Marion
DOBIE as well as many nieces,
nephews and Friends.
A funeral service was held in Burns Church on January 10, 2006
with Dr. David

Honourary pallbearers were Elmer

ALLEN, April
HUBBARD,

by Burt HALE and a reading by John

Evelyn
DARGAVEL and
Kenton HUDSON shared their gift of music and Burt
HALE,
Rev.
Charles JACKSON,
Barbara
SHIER and Kenton
HUDSON sang "Because
He Lives". Following the service a large crowd enjoyed the wonderful
lunch organized by the Osprey Museum Committee assisted by Friends
in the community.

be missed walking the streets of Feversham with his wee dog Lori.

Gunfire's first victim of 2006
Man, 21, found dead in front seat of car in west end
Slaying linked to gangs and drug trade, Miller says
By Harold LEVY,
Staff
Reporter
A 21-year-old man found slumped in the front seat of a car in
a convenience store parking lot early yesterday morning is Toronto's
first homicide victim of 2006 -- dead of apparent gunshot wounds.
Police found the body of Dillan Yhanike
ANDERSON in a Cadillac
parked near a dumpster loaded with garbage, a bullet hole visible
through the front windshield.
ANDERSON's slaying follows a record year of death by gunfire
here -- 52 of Toronto's 78 homicides in 2005 were the result
of gun violence, more than double the 24 gun-related deaths in
In an unrelated incident, police said a man was taken to hospital
after he was stabbed in the neck at a restaurant on College St.
near Spadina Ave.
The man, who has non-life-threatening injuries, was injured just
after revellers began cheering in the New Year.
Residents of the Dufferin St.-Eglinton Ave. W. area where
ANDERSON's
body was found awoke to see police cars and webs of yellow police
tape cordoning off his car.
Marie XERRI-
GLASS of Vaughan, who was visiting her elderly mother
for New Year's, said she woke around 5 a.m., but heard no shots.
"We didn't hear anything but around 5 a.m. the dog acted strangely
and came into the bedroom," she said.
"It's a bit frightening when this happens across the street from
where you live,"
XERRI-
GLASS added. "My mother is not happy about
it."
Police confirmed
ANDERSON was charged three years ago with robbery
and using an imitation firearm in an incident that also involved
a youth armed with a gun.
The
North▲
York Mirror reported at the time that the man
ANDERSON
allegedly robbed was shot in the parking lot of a North York
highrise as he tried to flee.
Yesterday's homicide occurred as the city was still reeling from
the shooting death of 15-year-old Jane
CREBA near the Eaton Centre
a week ago, which also left six other people injured.
Geoff TEBBUTT, who moved into the area about six months ago,
said he stumbled across the scene when he went out to do some
errands at the local corner store, where
ANDERSON's car was found.
"That's really scary," said
TEBBUTT, 44. "The first murder of
the year and it's in our block -- it's not a good thing."
The shooting got the attention of Mayor David Miller who, after
celebrating the mayor's annual New Year's levee yesterday afternoon,
met with reporters and deplored the violent beginning to the
year.
"This one again appears to be connected to the gangs and the
drug trade," Miller said.
"It was very sad. Every shooting fills me with sadness."
Miller said he looked forward to a heavier police presence on
Toronto's streets.
"I'm very pleased that another 300 police officers will be on
the streets of Toronto in two weeks, patrolling neighbourhoods,
patrolling downtown," he said. "That's very important.
"I'm pleased with the Prime Minister's commitment to ban handguns
because guns stolen from collectors are used in crimes in the
streets of Toronto and we have to get them off the street.
"With the Prime Minister's commitment yesterday to get our civil
services together, we can start getting some of the money that's
been committed out into the neighbourhoods where it's needed."
