SCHLEICH,

Mother, poet. Born May 13, 1927, in Hamilton, Ontario Died May 28,
in Chesley, Ontario, of natural causes, aged 79.
Unlike Chaucer's famous Wife of Bath whom she admired and who
outlived five husbands, Chris
GIFFELS outlived only two. The
first was a handsome, sailor-salesman. The second worked a lifetime
at Polymer in Sarnia and was a devoted family man. They represented
the contrary imperatives that propelled her through life. Like
her literary hero, she always said that she was on a pilgrimage.
Like many women of her generation, she had had little formal
education, but all her life she hungered for models and ideas
to help transcend the hand life dealt her. Always she yearned
to discover and express her intense creativity and considerable
raw intelligence. Her marriages she likened to bookends framing
her life; in the middle, though, "I ran my own show."
Her parents were from Liverpool and imposed a strict, "unconscious"
Protestant upbringing. And then, "like fire and powder/Which,
as they kiss, consume" (she loved Shakespeare, too), along came
Paul, the handsome Romanian-German immigrant Canadian navy sailor
"hunk" with whom she had seven children in eight years, shocking
both sets of parents. It started at the legendary Wonderland
dance pavilion in London, Ontario, during the Second World War,
where men on leave would partner up, jiving to the Big Bands.
She was with her sailor for 10 years. "I was a stupid kid, but
oh could he dance, the old goat," she said more than once.
Painfully, he danced with many other women too and their marriage
inevitably collapsed. Even so, she'd show the picture of their
wedding day in 1944, he in his sailor's uniform, and she a striking
17-year-old beauty who craved excitement and change. And then
she'd show the wedding pictures of her and Bill 20 years later.
(Sometimes, she'd show another picture, taken in between, of
seven children hanging off an exhausted young woman of 27 who
needed to flee to survive.)
Where she found the courage or the depths of her despair, we
can only speculate, but she left her first husband and their
kids behind and went on an unusual odyssey for a woman of her
time and adopted Catholic faith. An eighth child, a boy, was
born but died soon after in Saskatchewan. She wandered alone
around North America for a number of years, at one point working
as a cook in two lumber camps in British Columbia, and at another
waitressing in a "greasy spoon" in San Francisco, all the while
carrying the guilt and stress of having left her children and
husband. Eventually she returned to southern Ontario and married
Bill GIFFELS, settling in Brigden. Little by little she re-engaged
with her own children and, with Bill, raised four more. Bill
always recruited her to be the manager of their northern camps
during hunting trips; she was a superb organizer. She became
a published poet at age 60, declaring that if she had it to do
again, "I'd try to be a writer like Alice Munro."
In the end, her body yielded to a lifelong load of kids, husbands,
work, and a numbing fear that she had missed herself. In her
final months she told tales of adventure that blended fact and
fantasy with an extraordinary narrative energy. She also quit
hiding a long-confined bitter edge, blaming herself for "a mixed-up
life."
The last time I saw her she wouldn't eat her dinner. Instead
she ordered and finished off (fast) a bowl of ice cream unsuitable
for any chronic diabetic, defying her caregivers with "Like it
or lump it." She was worried about her 37 cats that day, too.
They lived with her in her self-described "cat house." Chris
GIFFELS's spirit plays out in the lives of more than two dozen
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is buried beside her
second husband, miles from her first.
David John
SCHLEICH is Chris's No. 3 son.
