Dear uncle of John and Sheila MARCHANT of Norfolk, England and Archie MARCHANT of Edinburgh, Scotland. Elaine and Errol CUSHLEY wish to thank all the people who gave of their time and help in helping us cope with the death of our son William who was killed in action in the fierce fighting with the Taliban insurgents in the Panswaii district of Kandahar Afghanistan on the 3rd of September, 2006. We want to thank all the many people from across Canada, England and the U.S.A. who sent cards of condolence and/or flowers and made donations to the Canadian Legion Branch 18. We are sending cards of thanks to all who included their address. For all others, please accept our heartfelt thanks. Your cards and flowers were a great comfort to us. We would also like to recognize some Friends who gave support above and beyond and who are continuing to do so: Sheldon PLANETTA, Janice LEYSTRA, Tom and Ellen ATKINS, Dave and Bunny ATKINS, Doug and Wille MANNING, Chris FILBY, Lynne McKERRACHER, Padre Dan, Father Grey, Father Gillespie, Father Philip and Pastor Bob. To the ex Royal Canadian Regiment senior warrant officer who traveled from Paris, Ontario to Petawawa to present his own regimental ring to me to wear in honour of William. For the military who have been with us every step of the way. The Commander in chief, Governor General Michells Jean-Generals Hillier and Leslie and all Officers, non-commissioned officer's, and Ranks. For Colonel TROLLOPE for his words of comfort at the red ribbon rally in Toronto. To the R.C.R. Regiment that William so loved and was so proud to serve in that he had the words Royal Canadian Regiment in 2 inch high letters tattooed on his back from shoulder to shoulder. Also for the way that the Regiment honoured him at his funeral. To Major Scott, the Commanding Officer of the rear party, for his words of comfort and kindness to both of us at both the base in Petawawa and William's funeral. We thank you Sir. And lastly to Captain Philip GAUGHAN, our Assisting Officer, who was and still is our rock and anchor. For guiding us through our sea of despair, for being the light at the end of the tunnel when all around us was darkness and for his compassion and kindness even at the expense of those nearest and dearest to his own heart. Passed away in Nanaimo on December 30th, 2005. Mary Lois is pre-deceased by her husband, Roger; her parents, Elizabeth and James and daughter Catherine. Mary Lois was also pre-deceased by her siblings, Catherine, Bernard, Loyola (McKENZIE), Lawrence, Joseph, Elizabeth, John, Thomas, James and Ilene (ZINGER.) She will be lovingly remembered by her son Robert (Norma) and grandchildren, Michael and Douglas, her son James and grandchildren Micha and Jude. Mary Lois is great-grandmother to Ruel, Aiden and Pheonix and step great-grandmother to Dylan. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Rachael FORESTELL and Helen FORESTELL. Mary Lois' cremated remains will be inurned with her husband in the family plot at Marymount Cemetery, Guelph, Ontario. A service of remembrance will also be held at a later date in Guelph, Ontario, day and time to be announced.

PENDLETON, Marie (formerly GAULEY, CABLE, McMANUS)
Marie's brave battle with Cancer ended peacefully as she slipped away at 3: 00 p.m. on September 21st, the first day of Fall, her favorite season. There were many Maries. The first graduated from Parkdale Collegiate where she was acclaimed Toronto's Miss Cheerleader of 1948. The second became Marie GAULEY, wife to Ron and mom to Steven and Lynn. One would think that might keep an average girl busy, but our Marie was never average. In addition she took on the roles of a full time Singer/Actress/ Opera School student and quickly joined the ranks of professional performers. Tyrone Guthrie chose her for consecutive seasons at Stratford in 'The Pirates of Penzance' and 'Orpheus in the Underworld'. Then followed shows on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation television: Canada's Hit Parade, GE Showtime, most of the Norman Campbell Arts Specials. A favorite of Herman Geiger Torel, she sang many roles with the Toronto Opera Festival which later became the Canadian Opera Company. The third Marie married the renowned composer and conductor Howard CABLE. Together they journeyed to New York City where they had a major involvement in the creation of some notable Broadway Musicals, "Man of La Mancha" for one. Her fourth adventure involved Boutique Fashion in the Muskokas where she owned and operated two stores, 'The Square Pumpkin', for several years. After a brief hiatus, she returned to Toronto for number five, the renewal of her stage and music career and more fashion at 'Pink Whiskers'. Part of Marie's number five was a "duet" with an old friend and colleague from her early years. It wasn't long before she took on Don and the McManus name and headed for a look at the opera world in Europe. But the pull of Toronto was strong and home was where her heart needed to be. New doors opened in Dinner Theatre and a return to one of her favorites, classical sacred music. After all, Marie was the soprano soloist at Emmanuel - Howard Park United Church from the age of 14 for nearly forty years. By the way, she was also an accomplished pianist and a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music. Her sixth and last accomplishment centered on the business world as a valued employee to two city law firms, Rogers, Smith, Dick and Thompson and most recently a cheery, welcoming voice at Ruby and Edwards and Associates. Marie PENDLETON was a shining star with an uplifting spirit who always gave the most of herself, never expecting or needing anything in return. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her throughout her rich, vital and creative life. Three lucky husbands, a daughter, son, daughter-in-law Lee and cousins and Friends by the score can attest to that. Marie had two last wishes: to have her ashes scattered at Big Rideau Lake, her beloved summer place since childhood. It lived in her heart year round. And, that family and Friends from all corners come together to Celebrate her Life with a real swell wake!! This will take place at the Performing Arts Lodge on the Esplanade, date to be announced. Lynne passed away suddenly at Princess Margaret Hospital on Friday, November 24, 2006 at the age of 52, after a long and courageous battle with lymphoma and MDS. Cherished daughter of the late Walter and June (GAULT) TURNER. Beloved sister of the late Carl TURNER. Lynne was passionate about her chosen profession of internal auditing. She worked nationally and internationally with Rio Algom, Canadian Pacific, and most recently as a self-employed consultant and in partnership with Brook Laker and Associates. She enjoyed her pastimes of travel and photography. Lynne will be dearly missed by her family and close circle of Friends, and remembered as a lady who was full of grace, dignity, caring and giving. Wife, mother, grandmother, philanthropist. Born December 22, 1920, in Manchester, England. Died December 5, 2005 in Toronto of natural causes, aged 84.
Those of us who came to know Clarice after 1977, knew her as a woman fully engaged in her community. She was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Toronto and given the Order of Ontario. Clarice was very proud of these honours (she liked to be referred to as Doctor Chalmers) but she was modest about her achievements.
This was the Clarice we knew. What we didn't know was much about her earlier years but we suspected they had not been happy. She was born shortly after the First World War into a family that seemed to have preferred boys more than an only girl. She married early and, by the beginning of the Second World War, she sailed away with a small son from the uncertainty of England to the safety of North America.
Some years later, in Montreal, Clarice married again and had two more children, another son and a daughter. This marriage also dissolved and she found herself a single mother with a young daughter to raise, which meant working; sometimes she had two jobs, just to keep up.
And then there was Wallace.
Wallace CHALMERS was the son of Floyd and Jean CHALMERS and the brother of Joan CHALMERS. He had also been married and was the father of four adopted children. Wallace was an engineer, an inventor, and a very successful businessman. Clarice and Wallace quickly became a loving, devoted, happy couple. They were married in Toronto in 1977 and for Clarice the world changed dramatically. Wallace taught and Clarice learned the responsibility, and indeed the privilege, of helping others through significant gifts of money.
Then Wallace developed cancer of the spine. There were periods of both remission and hospitalization. During these years Wallace established the Trauma Centre at Saint Michael's Hospital and funded a teaching position at the hospital. Clarice became a volunteer. Wallace died there in palliative care, at 64, in 1987. They had been married barely 10 years.
After Wallace's death, Clarice became very much her own person in the world of philanthropy. She was most proud of her volunteering and gift-giving at Saint Michael's. She continued support of the Emergency Department and the Palliative Care Unit but she also developed a watchful eye for the wellbeing of patients and staff. She was very aware of the devotion and bravery of nurses during the severe acute respiratory syndrome crisis and she established the Clarice Chalmers Nursing Award to honour them. For patients in palliative care and in other units, she had afghans knitted so they might feel warm, perhaps even cherished.
At the same time, Clarice was well aware of Wallace's interests. Wallace had established the Chalmers Engineering Design Awards just before he died; Clarice endowed the awards and set up the award dinners. She thoroughly enjoyed quizzing the successful students about their prize-winning designs. In some cases, she supported students in their further studies.
Together with the CHALMERS family, she was very supportive of the arts in Canada. But she also gave on her own. Among her last major gifts is the statue of Glenn Gould, seated on a park bench, in front of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation studios in Toronto.
By the spring of 2005, Clarice could no longer care for herself and very reluctantly moved to the nursing facility of Belmont House. There were still moments of her agile humour and her big smile but they became fewer and fewer. Then, with typical modesty, she slipped away.

Of Saint Thomas, passed away at the Saint Thomas-Elgin General Hospital on Tuesday, May 2, 2006, in his 53rd year. Former husband of Susan (RILEY) McCULLOUGH of Saint Thomas. Step-son of Edward W. "Ed" WILSDON of Saint Thomas. Brother of Terry McCULLOUGH and his wife Elizabeth of Toronto, Robert McCULLOUGH and his wife Lynda of Madoc and Brian WILSDON of Saint Thomas. Step-brother of Ken HOPE and his wife Kim of Elliot Lake and Christina HOPE of Toronto. Also survived by his mother-in-law, Edna RILEY and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Born in Renfrew, Ontario, April 4, 1954, the son of the late Glen McCULLOUGH and Late Lorna (GAUTHIER) WILSDON (Aug. 29, 2005,) he was a resident of Saint Thomas since 1969, other than several years spent in the Canadian West. He was a consultant with the automotive industry. Larry was an active volunteer with the Elgin Theatre Guild. He formerly coached minor baseball in Saint Thomas and was formerly active in the scouting movement in Saint Thomas and Alberta. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and interment will be made in Elmdale Memorial Park. A public memorial service will be held at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington Street, Saint Thomas on Saturday, May 6th at 1 p.m. Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society gratefully acknowledged.
