Coroner to investigate charged war vet's death
Canadian Press, Page A8
Burlington, Ontario -- An Ontario war veteran charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife has died in hospital.
Ron GATES, 85, was under police guard at Burlington's Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, where he was taken after stabbing himself last month while in custody.
Because he was injured while in custody, a coroner's investigation will look into his death.
Halton Region police say Mr. GATES's wife Audrey, who was also 85, was strangled September 12 in the home the couple shared for 40 years. The incident took place eight days after the couple marked their 55th wedding anniversary.

GATT, Anthony Paul
July 12, 1986
We travelled many roads together and although the journey was not always easy, we grew closer and learned to understand each other really well along the way. With you at my side the journey was always good. To walk in your footsteps, to speak with your integrity, to listen with your openness, to live with your principles anyone would be proud to be like you. It hardly seems like 20 years since we talked face to face, Dad. In loving memory Ferdinand, Reta and Jason GATT.
