Slain hockey player 'had class'
Former Vermont teammates turn out to honour 25-year-old killed
by blow to the head
By John GODDARD,
Staff
Reporter
A tender story about Michael
SERBA's sense of sportsmanship started
the rustle of tissues at his funeral yesterday.
Father Andrew
FIGOL delivered a eulogy for the 25-year-old former
hockey star and scholar, who died last week after being smashed
in the head after leaving a Bloor West Village bar.
The tribute came from several sources, the priest said, including
a message from a young Vermont father.
"This guy had class," said the priest, quoting the unnamed father,
who recalled a critical hockey match last season when
SERBA was
captain of the Norwich University Cadets in rural Vermont.
"Prior to the game," the story went, "my son was sitting in a
tunnel area of the arena. He was wearing a Middlebury jersey.
He was obviously a Middlebury fan."
Norwich and Middlebury were arch-rivals.
SERBA, not yet in uniform, started chatting with the boy sitting
alone and spent 20 minutes talking with him about hockey.
"When the teams came on the ice, I noticed Norwich player No. 20
tap my son on the shoulder with his stick," the father recalled
it was the first time the boy realized that he had been talking
to a rival player.
"Norwich won," the father also recalled.
"As the team came off the ice, my son gave No. 20 the thumbs-up."
Nearly 500 mourners crowded into St. Demetrius Ukrainian Byzantine
Catholic Church for the two-hour service, in the Eglinton St.
and Royal York Rd. area of Etobicoke.
That included two busloads of hockey players, fans and Friends
attending from Norwich U, about a three-hour drive south of Montreal.
Two in particular stood out.
They were wearing both the home and away versions of Norwich
team jersey No. 20, crimson and gold, with a big C on the upper
left chest.
"Why did this happen?" said
FIGOL, lamenting the senselessness
of the death. "Why him? Why did he have to go in the way that
he did?
"All the knowledge in the world cannot explain why."
SERBA, 25, grew up in Toronto and attended St. Demetrius before
leaving for Norwich on a hockey scholarship.
After four years, he left the team this season, when his eligibility
ran out, to pursue an M.B.A. but continued to live with former
teammates.
On a Toronto visit the weekend before last, he met up with Friends
at a west-end club.
At one point he left to use a bank machine and returned to say
he had been "sucker-punched," police later said.
SERBA then led his Friends in search of the assailant and was
smashed with a brick-like object in a passageway connecting Bloor St.
to the Jane subway station.
He was put on life support in hospital but died on Tuesday of
last week.
SERBA's family has asked for privacy but a few days ago issued
a statement saying it had donated the young man's organs.
"Out of this tragedy we are comforted that Michael's great many
qualities of strength, determination, compassion and goodness
continue to shine through beyond his life," it said.
Charged with second-degree murder in
SERBA's death is Nicholas
CROWDIS, 22, of Toronto.
