ORSINI,
Gerald
Gerald ORSINI, of Phoenix, Arizona, went home to meet his heavenly
Father on Saturday, December 31, 2005. Born in Toronto, Jerry
moved to Arizona in 1967. He had two primary devotions: the Lord,
to whom he dedicated his life; and his family, specifically his
wife, Betty, whom he loved very, very much. A fluent speaker
of Spanish and longtime, active member in St. Agnes Parish, Jerry
was instrumental in bringing Mass in Spanish to the St. Agnes
community. He served as an usher, lector, and Eucharistic minister,
also delivering communion to the sick and homebound. He ministered
to the migrant workers alongside Cesar Chavez, and also was very
active with the Comunidad de Base faith ministry. A tireless
advocate for the poor, Jerry worked for many years with the St.
Vincent de Paul Society, stocking the St. Agnes pantry, delivering
food boxes, and serving meals at the soup kitchen. Ever faithful
to the Blessed Mother, Jerry spent much of his spare time making
hundreds of rosaries for Our Lady's Rosary Makers to send to
the missions around the world. Toward the end of his life, Jerry's
priority shifted to caring for his wife at home. Jerry is the
beloved son of the late Emilio and Sarah (née

ORSINI
and dear brother of Rita
LETTNER,
Basil
VINCENT (deceased,) Sister
Eleanor (deceased), and Father Frank (deceased). He is survived
by Betty, his wife of 40 years; his daughters, Corina, Laura,
and Ann; his granddaughter, Samantha; and his grand_son, Eric.
In remembrance of Jerry, donations can be sent to the St. Vincent
de Paul Society, P.O. Box 13600, Phoenix, Arizona 85002 or Hospice
of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85014.

Star's Marlow
NEWBY, 75, beloved boss
By Isabel TEOTONIO,
Staff
Reporter
Some called him Mr. Good Morning. Others called him Mr. Patience.
But all agreed that Marlow
NEWBY was a gentleman of the highest order.
NEWBY, a former circulation manager who dedicated 35 years to
the Star, died Jan 26. after a brief battle with lung cancer.
He was 75.
"He was such a gentleman to his staff -- he was Mr. Good Morning,"
recalled Rupert
FRY, former executive director of circulation,
who worked with
NEWBY for about three decades.
"Each morning he'd go around the office and say, 'Good morning,'
to everybody -- and that was a pretty good-sized floor, so it
took some time,"
FRY chuckled at the memory. "But that was Marlow.
He had a sense of caring for people and was a good friend to many."
His sentiments were echoed by Berrie
FEENEY, who was
NEWBY's
secretary for 20 years. She, however, had a different moniker
for her beloved boss. "He was Mr. Patience.
"He was a wonderful man, a great man and a great boss. All of
us were fond of him," said
FEENEY, calling him a "people person"
who would greet everyone with a smile.
While NEWBY wasn't a jokester himself, he always loved a good
joke and a funny story, recalled his second wife, Janet
HOFFMAN,
with whom he spent the last 22 years of his life. "He was a great
audience. He had a wonderful laugh and he enjoyed other people…."
NEWBY was born in Cardston, a small town in southwestern Alberta.
When he was a boy, his parents moved the family to nearby Lethbridge,
where he later attended university.
Fresh out of school,
NEWBY was hired by American News, a magazine
distribution company based in the United States. He started out
delivering magazines, but hard work and perseverance paid off
and he quickly rose through the ranks to management.
NEWBY's work took him to the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia,
where he lived for a few years, and eventually landed him in
Halifax, where he met his first wife, Dorothy.
After the company's collapse, the Star quickly scooped him up
in 1957 to work in the circulation department, where he spent
much of the next 35 years before retiring in 1992. He worked
briefly in marketing, but returned to circulation, which was
his true passion. It was there that he left his greatest mark.
"He was truly a professional,"
FRY recalled of
NEWBY's days as
circulation manager. "He spent a great deal of time researching
other papers in North America, looking for better ways to do
circulation distribution."
The result, he said, was
NEWBY's introduction of new and innovative
circulation sales programs during the 1980s, which helped boost
circulation. And despite putting in long hours at work, he also
found time to serve as president of the Canadian Circulation
Management Association in 1984.
Besides HOFFMAN,
NEWBY is survived by four children from his
first marriage: John
NEWBY,
Chris
NEWBY, JoAnne
NEWBY and
LeeAnne
NEWBY, along with their partners and grandchildren.
