VANDERWEYST urged more mammograms for young women
By Susan KIRWIN, Free Press Reporter, Sun., September 17, 2006
Breast cancer isn't an older woman's disease, a reality Krista VANDERWEYST felt passionate about.
The 34-year-old Londoner died July 20 after battling the disease for a year and a half.
"Her biggest thing was that something needed to change," said her best friend, Sara DIPONIO. "If you go to the doctor in your 30s and say you have a lump, many doctors say it's probably nothing."
Krista left behind a three-year-old son, Jack, husband, Jamie VANDERWEYST, and mother, Beth KIRBY.
"Her relationships, whether it was with her family or her close Friends, were precious gifts to her," said DIPONIO.
Krista was just about to finish a second degree in social work at King's College in London while working full time at Canada Life, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
She'd already finished a certificate in addiction counselling.
"She wanted to work with adolescents," said Jamie. "It was about what she could do for us and who she could help."
Krista excelled at school, earning 100 per cent in one of her classes.
"She was well-known by her professors because she was probably always asking a lot of questions," said Jamie.
That same energy and drive, she poured into her battle with cancer.
At the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce Run for the Cure last fall, Krista surprised herself when she defied her fear of public speaking.
"She got up there and she was so confident," said DIPONIO.
Krista told the crowd how her battle with cancer didn't change who she was, said DIPONIO.
She talked about the misconceptions of the disease.
"It's not an older woman's disease," said Krista's mother. "We had no family history of breast cancer."
Krista said more mammograms and biopsies should be done on younger women.
"She wanted to make young women aware that they can insist any lump be biopsied," said DIPONIO. " You have to be your own advocate for your health."
Krista's message reached a lot of women that day.
"She was surprised that she could say something and make a difference," DIPONIO said.
