EBBELS, William D. " Bill"
Died peacefully, surrounded by family, on April 13, 2006 in Regina, Saskatchewan at the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre, where he was a long time resident. Bill was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on July 20, 1922, son of Harold Amory EBBELS, K.C. and Innis Colton EBBELS. He graduated from City Park Collegiate prior to attending the University of Saskatchewan. His studies were then interrupted by the war. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942 and served as a Gunnary and Navigation Officer, the latter on the minesweeper H.M.C.S. Canso, the lone Canadian ship with a British flotilla in the Normandy Invasion. During his leave to Canada after D-Day, he married Irma Ruth HUTCHINSON/HUTCHISON on September 16, 1943 in Montreal. He returned to Europe and was subsequently discharged in 1946. Bill's completion of his Bachelor of Commerce at U of S in April 1947 competed with the birth of their first child, Harold DENNIS. After graduation Bill joined the Regina investment firm of Houston and Willoughby where he spent his entire career, becoming the Executive Vice President and General Secretary where he was also involved in the Investment Dealers Association of Canada. The firm went through various mergers eventually ending up as part of RBC Dominion Securities. Bill retired in 1988. Bill was engaged in the community affairs and business of Regina all his life. He was a director of numerous community organizations and was a long-standing member of the Regina Kinsmen club, serving as President in 1967. He served on the Board of the Regina Exhibition, including a term as President. Bill was on the Senate of the University of Saskatchewan and active in the alumni association. As the first Chairman of the Regina Leader-Post Carrier Foundation, he encouraged carriers to go on to higher education. He was on the Board of the Canadian Scholarship Trust Fund. Throughout his life Bill was an avid and accomplished athlete. He was on the U of S Varsity basketball, hockey, lacrosse and tennis teams, with tennis the focal point and love of his sporting life. Starting in 1948 he was an eight-time Saskatchewan Open Singles champion and runner-up seven times. At age 45 he won his last title in 1967, also winning the veterans singles championship - the only person to win both in the same year. A great thrill was representing Saskatchewan in the first Canada Summer Games in Halifax in 1967, where he was the oldest competitor at 49. As a renowned builder of the game in Saskatchewan he undertook countless administrative and instructional roles including President of both the Regina Tennis Club and the S.L.T.A., for several terms each. Bill was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 1976. Bill cherished his family time during the many summers at Lumsden Beach, at the condo in Manzanillo, Mexico, on the countless camping trips stuffed into the family station wagon, and on the tennis courts with his kids or crisscrossing Western Canada to tennis tournaments -- both his and the kids. Bill had a wonderful sense of humour and was always quick with a laugh. He loved singing, doing the ol'soft shoe, and was full of life and vigor in everything he did. Besides Ruth, his remarkable wife of 62 years, Bill is survived by his children: Hal (Donna and Tannis, Rob) of Calgary, Jim (Bonnie and Alecia) of Calgary, Jack (Pat and Calen) of Victoria, Bill (Sheila and Kelly, Lendon, Will) of New Jersey, Virginia (Tim COSBEY and David) of Gabriola Island and Andrea (Callum HILL) of Vancouver. Bill was predeceased by his brother Jack (Lois and Tim, Susan) of Calgary. Ruth wishes to express her heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre where Bill had been a resident for the last thirteen years. Bill has been blessed with the finest Friends possible, all of who have provided extraordinary support through these last difficult years. Funeral services will be held at Lakeview United Church, 3200 McCallum Ave., Regina, 306-586-7844, on Monday, April 17, 2006, at 2: 00 p.m. with reception to follow at the church. Passed away at Lisaard House in Cambridge on Tuesday November 21, 2006 in his 86th year with his loving family and special Friends at his side. He was predeceased by his loving wife Marjorie (SCHMIDT,) his brothers Leo, Francis, Bert, Roy, and Fred. Wilf (Poppy) started Keleher's Western Wear 50 years ago. He had a love for horses, and an entrepreneurial spirit. Dad's passion to laugh and his sharing of tall tales will be sadly missed. It's not what you take with you, but what you leave behind. Poppy (Dad) will be deeply missed by his children, Connie COSMAN, and her husband John, Shirley KELEHER, Anita GEDDES, Ron KELEHER, Larry KELEHER and his wife Lisa. Poppy will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his 5 grandchildren Holley, Brieann, Jon, Emily and Larrisa. Tom was a World War 2 Veteran who volunteered for auxiliary in 1939. He was called in August 1939 and served from 1939-1940 in Aircraft Defense Edinburgh, Scotland. He transferred to London, England Battle of Britain 1940-1942, and then was shipped overseas to India, Burma 1941-1945 and Demobed London, England in 1946. Relatives and Friends will be received at the Van Heck Funeral Home, 172 Symes Street, Glencoe on Friday evening from 7-9 p.m. where a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 10th at 11 a.m. Interment of cremated remains at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, London at a later date. Bill was the beloved husband of Benedikta "Bennie" (UETZ- PRINZ.) He was the loving father of Fred (Joanne) of Calgary, Debbie (Wayne McDOUGAL) of Blyth, Gary (Lorraine) of Medicine Hat, Norman (Bev) of Angus, Richard "Dee" of Parry Sound, Kim (Mark VANMAELE) of Courtland, Karen of Novar, Billy Joe (Tammy) of Gravenhurst, Dana (Alisha) of Calgary and step-father of Sybil (Kevin COSTELLO) of Welland, Hans UETZ (Stacey) of North Bay and Robert UETZ (Carol) of Innisville. He was the proud grandfather of 26 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Bill was the dear brother of Helen (Gerald HORLOR) of London, Mary (Gord WILLIAMS) of Grand Bend, Karen (Doug COURTNEY) of Grand Bend and was predeceased by sisters Ebba (the late Jack EXLEY), Greta GARNET, and Ella DENNCOTT (the late Gord). He was predeceased by his first wife Isabelle and is survived by his second wife Anne. From his heart he leaves his daughter and shining star, Meghan Elizabeth, at home, and his mother Joyce COSTELLO of Oshawa. Ian will be deeply missed by Monique - second daughter by choice. He will be remembered by Friends and family as the big man, with the big hands and a bigger heart. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Ian's Life will take place while the pickerel are in season… but, before the ducks are in.

The wife and family of John Wallace WILSON would like to sincerely thank our caring family, Friends and neighbours for their kindness and support during the sad loss of a dear husband and father. A heartfelt thanks goes to Wallace's sister Phyllis and her husband Walter POWER and his brother Robb and his wife Lily and their daughters Val and Joan for their never-ending dedication and support to the family, over the past 9 years. Special thanks and appreciation to those who gave beautiful flowers, generous donations to the Hospice Georgian Triangle and the General and Marine Hospital, thoughtful cards, and kind messages of sympathy. Many thanks goes to Doctor D. WATKIN and Doctor T. KATAI for their caring and compassion and many house calls over the years and Marjori of Majors Pharmacy whose help was always appreciated and also the kind nurses at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital who helped us in our loss. We would like to thank all those who were able to attend the visitation and the funeral service and to recognize Wallace's life. Special thanks to those who contributed to the ceremony, Rev. Julia MORDEN, Rev. Lynda GRAHAM and Rev. Chris COSTEROUS for their kind ministrations and comforting service, George CLARKE for his compassionate words, Stacey WILSON for her inspiring verses, and Ruth CURRIE for her beautiful rendition of "Amazing Grace". Thank you also to the Red Cross and St. Elizabeth Homecare, especially Roberta SCHARUDA, Barb BEAMISH, and Yvonne WEBB for their wonderful care and support over the years, also the Hospice Georgian Triangle for their never-ending care of Wallace during his many visits, also Elizabeth GIBSON who was always there for us and was a great comfort to Wallace in his final days, also the McCartney Family, The House Family, and Donato Family with wonderful gifts of food. Not forgetting Franco "The Barber" who made house calls to cut Wallace's hair. The Ladies of Wasaga Beach Community Presbyterian church for the wonderful lunch they provided after the ceremony, our heartfelt thanks to everyone.
