A letter to my husband Stan. Our marriage of 39 years was a long
time of togetherness, the 2 years since you left me feels like
an eternity. God I miss you, I love you so much! Since the first
time I met you I knew then that you were the one, I have hundreds
of memories to reflect on that sometimes will trigger part of
our past, you enjoyed music and songs that we both loved... makes
me teary eyed. My proudest moment was when I could say "my husband"
to you. I cherish some of the little things which would mean
nothing to anyone else, the way you said Helen when I phoned,
your love of the garden, I talked to you 100 times a day, I still
have you at home with me. I can't bear to say a final goodbye
to you. My wishes are that my ashes will be interned with yours
so that we will be together for eternity. Love you and miss you.
Miss Helen

Sheila of Kincardine and the late David (2000). Much loved granddad
of Kathryn, Heather, Ian, Shawn, Moira, Nyree, Daniel, Laura,

at Walkerville Collegiate Institute from 1934 until 1968. He
was the New Democratic Party Member of Provincial Parliament
for Sandwich/Riverside and Windsor/Riverside from 1967 to 1977.
He helped create legislation to establish an organ and tissue
donor program, mandatory seat belts, and designated non-smoking
areas. He advocated the use of wind, solar, and wave energy.
When the Ontario Ministry of the Environment was established
in 1975 its first Minister, the Hon. George Kerr, attributed
its creation to the 'member for Sandwich-Riverside' because of
his persistent question period campaign and open letters exposing
such environmental hazards as mercury from the St. Clair River
at Sarnia, and emphasizing the need for immediate corrective
action. Cremation has taken place. Visiting will be held at Emmanuel

Mother, arts administrator, volunteer. Born February 6, 1954,
in Montreal. Died October 12 in Peterborough, Ontario, of melanoma,
aged 52.
As a young girl in the very formal Montreal of the Fifties, Liz
was bundled off in her best outfit to a friend's birthday party
where a newspaper photographer captured her wide-eyed, adorable
face. In later years, she found this picture less embarrassing
than the picture of us kids sitting in our underwear among the
tall flowers in the garden behind our house on Geneva Crescent.
A move to Westmount brought Liz to the girls' private school
The Study, where she was an excellent student. Her marvellous
sense of humour and mimicry began to emerge, imitating the pompous
voice of a schoolmaster, commanding "Conduct yourself in an orderly
manner …" Liz also revealed musical and artistic talents early:
She won a museum contest to design a moss garden and at an annual
Arts and Letters Competition at the local Young Men's Christian
Association, she and her friend Sally Grenville carried off honours
for their recorder duet. Later, in Montreal and at the Emma Willard
School in New York, Liz honed both her musical talents and many-faceted
creativity, as exemplified by her stitching 250 sequins onto
our parents' Silver Wedding tablecloth.
Queen's University years found Liz matriculating with another
childhood friend, Celia Swan. Living in Kingston's student ghetto,
she acquired the nickname "Spooner." The mystery behind the epithet
endured even as it always provoked teasing from her siblings.
Further art studies led Liz to meet and marry David
BIERK, an
instructor at Fleming College in Peterborough, where they settled
after a garden wedding. David brought to the marriage his delightful
children, who spent happy times in the young couple's home with
its jumble of dog, antique "finds" and sons Alex, Jeff, Nick
and Charlie, born in quick succession.
Through their collaboration at Bierkart, situated in an historic
building they restored in downtown Peterborough, Liz's creative
impulse, business acumen, and singular ability to make wide connections
in the larger art world enhanced the success of David's burgeoning
career as a painter. He died at the zenith of his talent in 2002,
also tragically young. Thus recent years placed on Liz's shoulders
the raising of their children as well as the meticulous administration
of his artistic legacy, both accomplished with aplomb and grace.
Somehow she also found time for many other pursuits: singing
with the Peterborough Singers, co-chairing the city's Centennial
Artsweek and generously sharing her expertise as an arts administrator.
Social concerns loomed, also: She volunteered with her boys in
feeding the homeless and at holiday meals, there was usually
a flyer for a good cause tucked into each place setting. Equally,
she loved sharing wine and far-ranging discussion with a Friday
afternoon circle of close Friends.
Last spring brought to Liz a recurrence of melanoma, supposedly
completely excised a year previous. Her intellect and sense of
humour intact to the end, she fought tenaciously for her life
in hospital and at home, nursed throughout with tender devotion
by our mother. Typically, Liz's focus remained on others: in
our final conversation, she asked me to take Mum to see Wicked.
She slipped away in her sleep after Mum had said goodnight for
what would prove the last time. I like to think that this final
image of deep love merged into happy dreams that wafted her ardent,
generous spirit to that place where she has become (to alter
but slightly Shelley's words) "a portion of the loveliness which
once she made more lovely."
John AIMERS is Liz's elder brother.
