He later passed down his knowledge and skills to the next generation
while acting as a coach for Truro Area Minor Hockey. He was a
man who loved Fridays more than anyone and a Friday's experience
could only be enhanced by a steak and draught at the Midtown

during which he would travel with the "regular crew" to an exotic

REID,
Ian▲
With the greatest sadness, we announce that heart disease took
Ian REID on March 23, in Saint Thomas. His Friends are invited
to pay their respects at 11: 00 a.m. on Friday, March 31. A gravesite
service will be held at Holy Angels' Cemetery in Saint Thomas,
Ontario. Ian, who previously lived in London, Mississauga, Toronto,
Chicago, Victoria, and Timmins was proud of his adopted Canadian
citizenship. Born at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in the City of
London, Ian and his brother Mac emigrated from England with their
parents in 1947. Harsh winters in Timmins were only one of many
difficulties that Ian overcame. When their mother Harriet, began
long radiation treatments to combat cancer, Ian and Mac sacrificed
childhood play to care for their baby brother; the love for reading
and learning they transferred to Brian enabled him to become
a Doctor of Philosophy, but Ian's schooling suffered and he matured
too quickly. By the time his mother died in 1965, he had already
married for the first time to Frances, mother of Ian, Diane,
and Réal. It was in the 1960s that Ian began helping others through
charitable acts that continued throughout his life, culminating
in recognition by the Governor-General of Canada. Ian was honoured
for his service to the Canadian Red Cross, supporting their work
with plasma and apheresis and donating blood himself more than
200 times. Never one to seek recognition, he helped others because
in his democratic world view he hoped that everyone would do
what they could. Based on his experience in palliative care,
Ian did appear in a volunteer training video for London Hospice.
Into his busy family and work life, he crammed many activities
to benefit others, serving on committees at London Transit and
the Byron branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. For many years,
Ian served as lay counselor to family, Friends, people in hospice
care, recovering alcoholics, and strangers whom he touched. Ian
and Rachelle fostered more than sixty children: "It was amazing,
the things that behaviour-challenged children would do for Ian,
things that they just wouldn't do for anybody else." Empathetic
and never condescending, he had a talent for making people feel
better. Earning a certificate in bereavement counseling from
the University of Western Ontario enabled him to apply research-supported
clinical advice to those who needed his support. A founder of
Employee Assistance at London Transit, Ian's pseudonym Justin
Fun was a columnist for the Omnibus newsletter. An avid writer
to newspaper editors, Ian also created a character Hal F. Wit,
who dispensed off-kilter advice through the neighbourhood newsletter.
Every day was humour day for Ian, especially when he helped others
deal with sadness. His work pals knew him as a "joke-a-day" man.
An unregenerate punster, Ian's gift for mimicry allowed him to
create many hilarious, imaginary, politically incorrect characters.
Snooker rivalry between Ian and Mac graduated to a snooker league
at Strokers involving many players in a dozen teams. Mac told
anyone who would listen that: "Starting the league was Ian's
way of getting a trophy." Like his father George, taken by cancer
in 1989, Ian was a proud Canadian who loved hockey - a game he
played for half a century. His team-mates loved his positive
talk and he used his management skills to make their rink time
fun time. In the past year at St. Gabriel's School he made play
time fun time for the little ones who called him, "Mr. Grandpa."
Those tykes are the only people who called him "Mister." To everyone
else, Ian REID was "Ian." Polite and unpretentious, but also
a man with a voice as huge as his heart, Ian made Friends every
place he went. He leaves a hole in his close family today. Rachelle,
his wife and companion these past 27 years, will miss him every
minute of every day. In addition to Diane, Ian, and Réal, Ian Sr.
leaves behind three daughters: Lori, Lisa, and Aimi; their husbands,
Michael BAYLEY and Gary
McKAY; two grand-children: Shannon
McKAY
and Fabbio
BALDINELLI; brothers, Mac of London and Brian of Annandale,
Virginia. He will be sorely missed by sisters, Joanne and Sharon.
A brother to all, Ian helped Raymond and Bob and Roger and too
many others to name. We, he left behind, will never know all
the good deeds he performed on this earth, but someone has been
watching. From Saint Thomas to St. Peter is a short drive. For
that trip we join Ian's best friend Fabbio, who says, "love you
Grampa."

You can shed tears that Frank is gone, or you can smile because
he lived, You can close your eyes and wish that he'd come back,
or you can open your eyes and see all that he left. Your heart
can be empty because you cannot see him, or your heart can be
full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow
and live yesterday, or you can be happy for tomorrow because
of yesterday. You can remember Frank and only that he is gone,
or you can cherish his memory and let it live on. You can cry
and close your mind, be empty and turn your back, or you can
do what he would want, Smile, Open your eyes, Love and Go on.
