Man hit during chase dies
By April KEMICK, Free Press Reporter, Fri., January 6, 2006
A London driver, gravely injured when he crossed paths with a
car speeding away from police, died last night after being taken
off life support.
Robert SAINT_DENIS, 47, was comatose since the early hours of December
23, when his car was hit by a vehicle racing from London police
at Clarke Road and Dundas Street.
Because of the massive head trauma he suffered in the crash --
which is being probed by Ontario's police watchdog -- doctors
only gave her father a five-per-cent chance of survival, said
Melanie SAINT_DENIS.
"The doctor said even if we kept him on life support, he would
have been a vegetable," she said of her father, who remained
bruised and covered in stitches. "It would have been no way to
live."
Her father, a security guard who was on his way home from work
at the time of the crash, stated in his will that he didn't want
to be put on life support, she said.
SAINT_DENIS' family, including his wife, siblings, mother, daughter
and stepchildren, gathered last night at Victoria Hospital to
make the difficult decision, she said.
"We all went down and said our goodbyes," said
SAINT_DENIS, who
was by her father's side when he died about 9: 30 p.m.
She said the reality of her dad's death hadn't sunk in.
"It would be easier to deal with if this happened in a regular
car crash," she said.
The crash is being reviewed by Ontario's Special Investigations
Unit, a civilian agency that examines police actions involving
serious injury or death.
The Special Investigations Unit, which has interviewed at least
five witnesses: and the officer involved, hasn't outlined the
circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
Michael ARCHER, 25, was charged with dangerous driving, impaired
driving causing injury, leaving the scene and operating a vehicle
with a blood-alcohol level above.08.

OLIVER,
Peter -- Dispatch:
By Bert ARCHER,
Page M4
'He would just eat books," said Peter
OLIVER's daughter, Anne
HODGSON. "He was always reading, reading, reading."
And as a professor of legal history at York University and editor-in-chief
of the Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History, as well as
associate editor of the Ontario Historical Studies series of
publications, Mr.
OLIVER had plenty of opportunity to indulge
his passion while exercising a major influence on the course
of legal historical studies in Canada.
"My father worked very hard," said his son, Kevin
OLIVER, who
remembers him always being available to his three kids (including
another son, Tony), no matter how busy he was, "yet he did not
see it as work."
Though he retired from teaching last spring and had recently
moved to Stratford with his partner, Sandra
WEBSTER,
Mr.
OLIVER
had planned to continue his work at Osgoode and retire at the
same time as his friend, Ontario Chief Justice Roy
McMURTRY,
in a couple of years.
Mr. OLIVER was the author of five books, and at the time of his
death from esophageal cancer on May 14 at the age of 66, was
working on his sixth, a history of the Conservative Party in
Ontario. "He was a Liberal federally, but a Conservative provincially
and for some reason, he just always wrote about the Conservative
Party," Ms.
HODGSON said. His other books include an edition
of the diaries of Allan
GROSSMAN,
Ontario's first Jewish Conservative
cabinet minister.
A memorial service will be held at Osgoode Hall at 5: 30 p.m.
on June 8, featuring tributes from Chief Justice
McMURTRY and
historian Ramsay
COOK. A book of essays in his honour, planned
since his retirement, is also in the works.

ARCHIBALD,
Brendan
James
(December 17, 1988-October 12, 2006)
Actor, Filmmaker, Musician, Writer, Poet, Artist, Comedian, Son,
Brother and Friend. Take my hand blind man. And I will lead you
To where you need to go. Your crippled mind and crippled sight
will only make you sink deeper. I want you to come with me. My
mind is not crippled nor are my eyes. Suffering comes only from
what you cannot see. And a blind man cannot see. Your task is
not impossible if you seek help from one of greater ability.
Rise up from your deep hole, and grab my hand in yours. And I
will lead you to where you need to go. Brendan
ARCHIBALD,
