TURNER,
Corinne
T.
(MILROY)
Our Mom left us on January 4, 2006, in the same manner that she
lived - with courage and dignity. Remarkable resilience and strength
sustained her throughout her life but it was time for her to
join those she missed so much. Together with her parents, Mary
and Jack, and her eight brothers and sisters, Corinne lived her
early life in Bourlamaque, Quebec, where she met our father James
(Jim) TURNER.
They married and raised a family of five children,
Ann, Jim, Paul, Kerry and Martha. After living for many years
in Red Lake and Deep River, Ontario, Mom's tenacity shone when
she and Dad moved to Toronto so she could start her new career
working for a mining company. Her Friends, children, five grandchildren,
beloved sister Marj, in-laws, and many nieces and nephews, will
miss her sense of humour, discussions of current affairs, politics
and the Leafs, and her unique ladylike manner. Her children,
with the support of Shelley, Paula, Sue, Julie, Anton and Tom,
and Marj, with Dick's blessing, shared many happy times with
Mom in recent months in spite of her illness. We will treasure
those moments. Our heartfelt appreciation to Dr.
WORKENTIN,
Dr.
FALLIS and the nurses on G5 at Toronto East General for the care
and compassion shown to Mom. For those who choose to, donations
to the Salvation Army, Mom's charity of choice, would be fitting.
As Mom requested, she will be interred with Dad in Saint Thomas,
Ontario, in a private service.

WORKMAN,
Joseph -- Died This Day
Psychiatrist, born near Lisburn, Ireland, on May 26, 1805
In 1829, he immigrated to Canada and attended McGill University
in Montreal. In 1835, he took his freshly minted medical licence
and moved to Toronto where, for a time, he ran a hardware business.
Later, he taught at a private medical school and in 1853 became
the superintendent of the Ontario Provincial Lunatic Asylum.
Until his retirement, in 1875, he took a personal interest in
each patient. At the time, this was departure from the accepted
practice of operating mental institutions like jails rather than
hospitals. He read to his patients, engaged in conversations
with them and generally made the asylum a happier place. He was
the author of numerous papers on insanity, and often served as
an expert witness at criminal trials. A medical pioneer, his
work inspired other doctors to treat the mentally handicapped
scientifically.
