WOODSIDE, Peggy (formerly DEVITT, née THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON)
Mother died on December 16, 2006 at Toronto East General Hospital. Peggy was born the fourth of four children in Toronto on August 13, 1921, to most beloved parents the Reverend and Mrs. B.W. THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON (Eva LOW/LOWE/LOUGH of Renfrew, Ontario.) Secondary schooling occurred in Kingston, Ontario, after which she graduated from Queen's University in 1943. In 1944, she attended the College of Education in Toronto, later teaching at Renfrew Collegiate, South Collegiate in London, Ontario, and Western Technical School in Toronto. From 1964 to 1986, Peggy taught at Leaside High School (Toronto). After her marriage to Bill DEVITT in 1947, they moved to Leaside where they raised their three children, Bill, Patricia (Pat) and Peggy-Anne. Immediately they became active in the community, at school, church and in sporting events. Having lived in Leaside for over fifty years, Peggy cherished her life-long Friends and neighbours. She was grateful for the warmth of their affection, in particular the staff and students at Leaside High School, her very close Friends at Northlea United Church, where she was an active member. In 1964, Peggy faced a sudden challenge, her husband died at age 45. Mother's indomitable spirit, and courage, her work ethic and the dedication to her loving children remained steadfast. Peggy resumed her teaching career at Leaside High School in 1964. She had many Friends and a wide range of interests such as The Book Club, music, theatre and her secret passion for sports and athletics scarcely ever missing a game on television. Much of the family socializing over the years occurred at the cottage on Danforth Lake, Quebec where her children and grandchildren have such fun and good times. In 1994, Peggy married Caryle WOODSIDE, a former Queen's University friend, who died suddenly in 1997. She is predeceased by her two husbands, two brothers, sister Evelina "Ev" (1985) and her daughter Patricia (1987). She will be lovingly remembered by her families Bill and Glynis DEVITT, Laurel and Robert; Peggy-Anne and Robert VAN VLIET, Kristyn and Jenna; Bill and Eileen FITZPATRICK, Allison and Ryan, Richard and Nancy WOODSIDE, John and Emma, a niece Elizabeth HUTCHINGS, nephews David and Peter THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON. Mother will be remembered for her guidance, support and generosity; her loyalty to and her love for her children, grandchildren and Friends. The family will receive Friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home - A.W. Miles Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East) from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 19, 2006. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 in Northlea United Church, 125 Brentcliffe Road, Toronto. Interment Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The unexpected passing of Ron (Ryan) TAILOR/TAYLOR on September 25, 2006 is announced with deep sadness. Ron was characterized by warmth, thoughtfulness and generosity, and beloved as a son, brother, uncle and great-uncle to an extent he perhaps did not realize. He was born in Oshawa, Ontario, the dear son of Velma (WOODWARD) and the late Charles TAILOR/TAYLOR, and is also mourned by his brother Doug (the late Tish,) his sister Pat (Robert) HURSTI, his nieces and nephews Nelson (Sheila) HURSTI, Laura (Bruce) DAWSON, Andrew (Maria) TAILOR/TAYLOR and Gillian TAILOR/TAYLOR, as well as seven grandnieces and grandnephews. Ron was an esteemed and popular genealogist who had worked at his chosen field since his teen-age years. He published and lectured extensively in his profession, gaining a reputation for his research capabilities and lively speaking style. For the TAILOR/TAYLOR and Woodward families, he was our own family researcher, recorder and raconteur whose forty years of gathering family tree information and anecdotes is a cherished legacy. He will be greatly mourned and long missed, not only by his family and colleagues in the genealogical world, but also by his wide circle of Friends. There will be a private family funeral service to be followed at a later date by a memorial celebration. Adored Poppa of Dwight and Clark REID and Kelly and Jennifer FAULDS all at home in London. Survived by his sisters Joyce and Donna. Also survived by many nephews and nieces as well as his trusted K-9 Sidekick, Webster. Predeceased by his brothers Glenn and Robert and his sister Shirley. Ray had a great passion and enthusiasm for many things in life; first and foremost, his family. He loved the outdoors, sports and shared this enjoyment with many, especially his children and grandchildren. He was very proud of the Watford area and was involved in numerous community activities. After co-owning (with Ruth), the Watford Home Hardware, the "Home Handyman" finally retired in the fall of 2005. Gwen was a loving woman of deep Christian faith who lived her beliefs by looking for the best in people and in all of life's circumstances. She taught her family through both word and deed and was a true advocate for important causes including health and accessibility. Along with husband Charles, she was a founding Board member of the Wexford Home for the Aged and co-founder of the Toronto Chapter of the Alzheimer Society. Active in Christian Women's Club and Community Bible Study, Gwen delighted in her children's accomplishments and in her grandchildren's adventures, always a compassionate shoulder to cry on, with a wise word of advice and unwavering support and encouragement. In her 81st year, on Tuesday, March 28, 2006, after a long struggle with a progressive neurological disorder. Beloved wife of the late Charles E. ONLEY, Q.C. Loving and devoted mother to David (Ruth Ann), Elaine (Allan), Richard (Sallie), Elizabeth (Jim), and Gordon (Tracy). Caring and active grandmother to Andrea, Jonathan, Emily, Cameron, Robert, Evan, Cynthia, Michael, Christie, Zoe, Nicole, and Daniel. Gwen was a loving woman of deep Christian faith who lived her beliefs by looking for the best in people and in all of life's circumstances. She taught her family through both word and deed and was a true advocate for important causes including health and accessibility. Along with husband Charles, she was a founding Board member of the Wexford Home for the Aged and co-founder of the Toronto Chapter of the Alzheimer Society. Active in Christian Women's Club and Community Bible Study, Gwen delighted in her children's accomplishments and in her grandchildren's adventures, always a compassionate shoulder to cry on, with a wise word of advice and unwavering support and encouragement. For Gwen there was always time to smell the roses and have a cup of tea. Special thanks to the staff at Mom's home for the past two years, the Claremont Retirement Residence, for their love and support, in particular her two main caregivers Anne and Arlene, and Irina of ParaMed Home Healthcare. Special thanks as well to the doctors and nurses at Sunnybrook, in particular Doctors Mary TIERNEY and Sandra BLACK. Your▲ wisdom, compassionate guidance and skills helped Mom and the entire family through many difficult days. With her family at her side, Mom entered into her Lord's presence to the words and music of her favourite hymn, His Eye is on the Sparrow, the Truth of its lyrics affirming her life and faith: Let not your heart be troubled," His tender word I hear, And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears; Though by the path He leadeth, But one step I may see His eye is on the sparrow, And I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, And I know He watches me."
