A plea for caution as a friend is lost
Man hit by van, then crushed by bus during a bad day on Toronto streets

When Mark stepped outside for an early morning smoke break yesterday, he was just moments away from watching an acquaintance die in the middle of the street.
"I shook him to see if he was aware, awake and alive," recalled Mark, an employee at a Wilson Ave. coffee shop who ran to the scene where the victim had been struck by a van, then crushed beneath a Toronto Transit Commission bus. Mark asked that his last name not be used.
"His face was gushing blood, his head was cracked and his hands were clear, lifeless," said Mark, who immediately recognized the victim as the mentally challenged man with a limp who often stood outside the shop asking employees for coffee and customers for change. "I'm really shaken up. To watch a guy die in front of you is really hard."
The "guy" was 65-year-old Allan FELDMAN -- one of several pedestrians struck in a spate of traffic accidents yesterday morning that occurred throughout the city. Feldman was the only fatality.
At about 7: 20 a.m. the Toronto man stepped in front of a westbound bus that was stopped on Wilson Ave., near Bathurst St. Passengers were getting on and off as FELDMAN crossed in front, said police. As he passed, he was struck by a minivan that knocked him under the bus. Unaware he was on the ground, the bus driver accelerated and the man was killed almost instantly. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"This is a tragic accident and we encourage pedestrians and drivers to be as careful as they can," said Sgt. Jim CASSELLS of Traffic Services. "It appears it was the rear (bus) wheels that ran over him."
In the hours following the incident, police and Toronto Transit Commission staff worked to pinpoint exactly which bus had hit the man so they could interview the driver. The driver of both the van and the bus have been interviewed, but police say it is too early in their investigation to determine whether charges will be laid.
A Toronto Transit Commission spokesperson refused to comment because of the ongoing police investigation.
"People are feeling the loss of a friend," said Sandy KESHEN, executive director of Reena, an organization that services people with developmental disabilities and runs a support home where FELDMAN lived. "Allan was a fiercely independent man and he had a wicked sense of humour."
Eric WOLFMAN, manager of Bagel World, where FELDMAN often started his day with a free coffee and twister, recalled him as a "happy go-lucky guy."
"He always sat in the same seat -- in the corner -- and loved to talk about sports," said WOLFMAN. " Sometimes his thoughts were all over the place… but he was well-informed."
Although FELDMAN could at times be a "nuisance" when asking customers for spare change or cigarettes, he was never aggressive and "didn't have a hurtful bone in his body," said the manager.
Less than an hour earlier, around 6: 40 a.m. in the city's northwest, a 21-year-old man escaped major injury, again in a hit-and-run incident.
About 40 minutes later, a vehicle struck a woman on Bathurst St. near Fairlawn Ave. The woman, believed to be about 80, was found conscious and breathing before being taken to hospital in serious, but stable condition.
And at about 8 a.m. an 11-year-old child was hurt in a hit-and-run incident in the Bloor West Village area, near Dundas St. W. and Keele St. The child was found "conscious and breathing and crying, so that's a good sign," said Staff Sgt. Noël LEE. Police are seeking a white van that left the scene.
Yesterday's events came on the heels of a tragic incident Wednesday night in Richmond Hill when a car killed a 37-year-old mother of four who was out jogging.
FELDMAN's funeral will be held Sunday at 11: 30 a.m. at Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel on Steeles Ave. W. Interment will follow in the Pride of Israel Synagogue section of Mount Sinai Memorial Park.

He was married to Anne McNAUGHTON, of London Township, Ontario, on May 8, 1948. She survives him. He was a World War 2 veteran. He was employed by GM until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of Frankenmuth United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 150 and the 82nd Airborne Division Association. Surviving besides his wife Anne are 2 daughters Ellen WOLKENSPERG of Lansing, Michigan, Laurie (Don) LINKERT of Midland, Michigan, 1 son Jim (Nancy) ALLARDYCE of Grandville, Michigan. Six grandchildren Jim and Dave WOLKENSPERG, Katie LINKERT, and Natalie, James and Jeffrey ALLARDYCE. Two brothers, Donald (Sue) of Escanaba, and Gordon (Carol) of Orchard Lake and many nieces and nephews. Peacefully, in his 78th year, Thursday, October 19, 2006 with his family by his side. Beloved husband of Luba. Devoted father of Yurey and Roman. Brother of Olya TARAPACKY. Uncle of Andrew TARAPACKY and his wife Luba and their family and Tanya and her husband Nicholas SZAFOWAL and their son Petrusyk. Cousin of Pavlo PIDLISNYJ and his sons Orest and Ihor, cousin of Halya OBERYSZYN and Katrusia WOLOWODIUK and their families, and Maria BAKALEC and her family. Also survived by relatives and Friends in Canada, United States and Ukraine. Bohdan was an electrical engineer and quality control supervisor with General Electric and Honeywell. Longtime member and Scout Master in Plast Ukrainian Youth Association. Resting at the Cardinal Funeral Home, 92 Annette Street (near Keele), Sunday and Monday 6-9 p.m. with Panakhyda both evenings at 7: 30 p.m. Funeral Service Tuesday 9:15 a.m., then to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church (Queen and Bellwoods) for Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Interment Park Lawn Cemetery. Dear uncle of Doreen and Walter HERTEL of Marco Island, Florida, Nancy and Paul BAKER of London and Mary Ann and Robert DUNN and Larry and Karen HUMPHRIES all of Strathroy. Special friend of Rick and Debbie WOLSEY of Petrolia. Fred served his country during World War 2 with the 12th Field Regiment, the 16th Battery Artillery, 3rd Division. Visitors will be received at the Needham-Jay Funeral Home, Petrolia, on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 from 12 noon to 1: 00 p.m. when a Royal Canadian Legion Br. #216 Memorial service will be held, followed by a funeral service, with Rev. Dr. Robert M. GIBSON of Saint Paul's United Church officiating. Interment of cremated remains in Strathroy Cemetery. DELESALLE, Marion Florence (née MURPHY)

Marion was the beloved wife of Joseph DELESALLE who passed away in 1991, and predeceased by her brother William MURPHY in 1942. She is survived by her six children, Patrick (Patty), Marianne (Kip), Kathleen (Tom), Michael (Dale), Timothy, and Nora (Blake) her nineteen grandchildren Kam, Tim, Jennifer, Nonie, Joe, Dionne, Sasha, Fiona, Matt, Connor, Megan, Cole, Danielle, Nicole, Torrie, Bugsy, Coady, Murphy, Katie; her ten greatgrandchildren Araya, Rylie, Avarie, Patrick, Alycia, Christopher, Knox, Jaxon, Noah and Haven, and two more expected soon. Marion and her sisters Pat, Marge and Nora (known as The Murphy Girls) were devoted to each other and they sadly mourn her passing. She will be missed by her cousins Helen HANNON (Nor) and Doris WOLTER (Jim,) both of Calgary. Many other nieces and nephews mark her passing with sorrow. Marion sincerely adored her dear friend Corrie, who gave loving care and was truly the wind beneath her wings. Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Marion made her way to Vancouver and graduated from the Saint Paul's Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. She fell in love with her sweetheart Joe, and they married on February 7, 1948. They had 6 children in under 5 years, making for a chaotic but happy household. Meanwhile, they were growing a small coal business into a successful home improvement company, known as Lumberland. Marion, Mern, May, Sis, Kitty, Mrs. D, Mum, Nanny: she was a woman of many names and talents, but the one thing that remained constant was her faith. She had faith in God, her family, her company and her wide community of Friends. Marion was proud to be a member of the Catholic Church, and of the Vancouver community and was an active member of the Vancouver Golf Club and many Charitable organizations such as Canuck Place. Marion spent many winters in Palm Springs, where she loved to spend time with family and Friends, play a few rounds of golf, and shop for good sales. But Vancouver was still her beloved city - she loved nothing more than a good crossword puzzle on the deck at Camp, a bowl of fresh crab and the company of Friends to enjoy a drink and the gorgeous view. Marion was a thoughtful and generous spirit: we fondly remember her banana bread being shipped far and wide, birthday checks for each age, Superbowl and St. Patrick's Day parties, Christmas celebrations, large family reunions, and many wonderful dinners at her favourite restaurants, the Cannery and the Pear Tree. While Marion enjoyed many blessings in life, she also faced each bump in the road with her trademark Irish spirit. She taught us all how to live with grace and with strength, even in her last few days. Her passing was in peace, and she was in the arms and prayers of her beloved family. She will be sadly missed. The family would like to thank all the caregivers for their help during our difficult time. We would also like to thank Father Ian for providing all of us with spiritual comfort. Prayers will be offered at 7: 00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30th at St. Helen's Catholic Church, 3860 Triumph Street, Burnaby where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at 10: 30 a.m. A reception will immediately follow the Mass. WOLYNETZ, Jean
84, a loving and caring mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt and dear friend, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2006 at home, surrounded by the love and support of her family and Friends, following a courageous and dignified battle with cancer. She was born on November 29, 1921 to John and Mary SHATZ (SZEC) in Toronto, Ontario. She was preceded by her husband John in 1996 and her son John in 2001. She is survived by her daughter Linda, granddaughter Tasha, and son-in-law Bernie. Jean will be remembered as a strong, sensitive and compassionate woman. She was a special person to all who had the pleasure of her Friendship and will be missed by everyone whose life she touched. The family will receive Friends at the DeMarco Funeral Visitation Centre, 8003 Weston Road, Woodbridge, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15, 2006. A celebration of Jean's life will be held on Thursday, March 16 at 11 a.m. at Saint Peter's Catholic Church, 100 Bainbridge Ave. (corner of Martingrove and Bainbridge), Woodbridge. A special thanks to Doctor J. Wendy D'ANDREA, Brenda her private nurse, and the Palliative Care Network for their caring, support and devotion.
