Well a year ago today our hearts weighed heavy with sorrow as we watched you go on your final journey leaving us with cherished memories. Memories of growing up, Christmas dinners, war stories, camping, laughing and crying while taking the next path life hands us together. You were a confidant, a teacher, and yet at the same time mischievous. Perhaps that's why you were so understanding when we were growing up. So in spirit you may be gone into, but when our children get into mischief or simply stomp their feet, we know a part of you is still with us. We can look into the mirror and see you looking back… it may be that devilish look or a twinkle in the eye. Tears still flow as we remember and celebrate your life. We miss you Grampa and will love you always Cheers!

It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of Jyri Erkki PALOHEIMO on March 29th, 2006. After a long struggle with cancer, he passed away peacefully surrounded by family and Friends at his home. Doctor PALOHEIMO was born in Kuhmo, Finland on June 7, 1932 to Sirkka and Major Erik PALOHEIMO. After completing his undergraduate degree in Abstract Mathematics at the University of Helsinki in 1953, he immigrated to Canada. He undertook post-graduate work at Columbia University, New York, and completed his doctorate at the University of Toronto while working as a Mathematical Statistician for the Fisheries Research Board in St. Andrews, New Brunswick and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Upon completion of his PhD dissertation, on the Theory of Search, he was immediately appointed Assistant Professor in both the Mathematics and Zoology departments of the University of Toronto, and later in the Institute of Applied Statistics there. In 1975 he became a member of the Institute of Environmental Studies, University of Toronto. He was promoted to Full Professor in 1976 in the Department of Zoology and the Department of Statistics. A world expert on search theory, he published over 70 academic papers, including some Citation Classics, and of the textbook, Models in Ecology, as well as contributing to other books in the field. He became an Emeritus Professor in 1997. A very quiet and unassuming person, Doctor PALOHEIMO had a lifelong interest in the inner life of man. His work on himself was felt by those he came in contact with. His attainments in this regard, as well as his genuine warmth and wry humour made him a guide and mentor for many people. He left behind former wife Linda PALOHEIMO, their children Roland WATT, Lisa HUGHES (Jan HUGHES,) Sven-Eric PALOHEIMO, Thomas PALOHEIMO and Jasmine PALOHEIMO, as well as former wife Anna CARLING, who provided vital nursing care in his final months, and their children Rolf PALOHEIMO (Diana POTTS) and Martti PALOHEIMO. He will be missed by his grand children, Jan-Christopher, Ceilidh, Reese and Keelan HUGHES; Shane (late,) Erik, Alison, and Leslie PALOHEIMO; Sean Eric MELVIN, and Martina, Kayla and Luke PALOHEIMO; and by great grandchild Serenity May MELVIN. In Finland, he leaves behind brothers Matti and Juhani (Jussi) PALOHEIMO and their families. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, April the 9th at 2 p.m. at Trinity College Chapel, 6 Hoskin Avenue, Toronto.

It was evident in all aspects of his life - as an athlete, in military service at the Royal Military College, in a successful career with Pfizer Pharmaceutical and most recently, as a grandfather. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and volunteers from the London Regional Cancer Centre and the Palliative Care Unit of Parkwood Hospital - distinguished health care professionals and very special people. Member of the Senate of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada. In recent years a dedicated and proud supporter of the interests of Veterans and advisor to Veterans Affairs Canada awarded the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation. Passed away peacefully in Toronto on May 4, 2006 in his 94th year. Beloved husband of Hazel Elizabeth (Betty) for 50 years. James will be missed by his stepson Richard KUEHNER and his wife Randi, grandchildren Jennifer and Stephen and great-grandchildren Kindred, Mason, Mackenzie and Alivia all of Calgary. James was born in Scotland on March 10, 1913 but was raised in Dublin, Ireland. He served as a pilot in the Royal Air Force, Bomber Command during World War 2 and as a B.O.A.C. Captain after the war. After immigrating to Canada, James was introduced to the tea business and became one of Canada's premier tea tasters and blenders. James was also a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, where he indulged his passion for sailing. A private family service will be held in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Peacefully at the Post Inn Village in Oakville, Ontario on September 30, 2006 following a lengthy illness which he courageously endured. Devoted and loving husband of Jean DWERRYHOUSE (née WATTERS.) Dear father of Peter, Pamela and Diana DWERRYHOUSE. Proud grandfather of John, Kirsten and Christopher DWERRYHOUSE, Melanie and Olivia KABELIN. Survived by his sister Diana BENSTEAD and his brother David in the United Kingdom, and predeceased by his brother Geoffrey. Born in London, England on April 9, 1923, he joined the Royal Air Force during World War 2, flying Spitfire and Mosquito fighter aircraft and attaining the rank of Flight Lieutenant. He was transferred to the Royal Navy (Air Branch) and was assigned in Canada training new Royal Canadian Air Force pilots. Following his discharge from the Royal Navy as Lieutenant Commander after the war, he returned to Canada to study law and commerce in Montreal, where he met his bride-to-be of 57 years. Throughout his professional career he was located in France, Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto. He acted as the International Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators where he contributed greatly to the growth and success of that organization. He was also a Freeman of Swansea. Ken will be remembered with great fondness as a loving father and husband, and as a loyal friend known for his integrity, strength, courage and determination. The funeral service will be held at the Church of the Epiphany, 141 Bronte Road, Oakville, at 2: 00 p.m. Tuesday, October 3rd with visitation from 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Foundation or the Alzheimer Society of Canada would be greatly appreciated. Betty was predeceased by her first husband Captain Gordon Voelker "Pete" KUEHNER, United States Air Force, missing in action, Korea and by her second husband James S. "Hamish" WATTERS on May 4, 2006. Betty was a dearly loved and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She is survived by her son Richard KUEHNER (Randi,) granddaughter Jennifer KUEHNER- BENESH (Scott,) grand_son Stephen KUEHNER (Melissa) and great-grandchildren Kindred, Mason, Mackenzie and Alivia. She also leaves behind her closest and life long friend June McLEAN and her dear cousin Joan CLARKE. Betty was born in Windsor, Ontario on July 13, 1920. She attended Whitney school and Jarvis Collegiate in Toronto. Betty was an elegant lady, an avid and accomplished bridge player and had a unique sense of humour. Peacefully, on Thursday, January 26, 2006, at Trillium Health Centre, Mississauga, in her 91st year. Much loved wife of Daniel. Dear loving mother to Ronald, David, and Brian (Isabel). Loving grandmother of Sandy, Daniel, and Julie. Survived by 3 great-grandchildren, and predeceased by 3 brothers and 1 sister. Friends will be received at the Ridley Funeral Home, 3080 Lake Shore Blvd. W. (between Islington and Kipling Aves., at 14th Street, 416-259-3705), on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass Saturday 10: 30 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church. Cremation to follow. Died peacefully on March 1, 2006 at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Born in Toronto, August 31, 1923, Donald was the son of the late Stanley and Mary (née WATTERS) O'DONNELL. He was an active journalist, public relations specialist and sales manager during his working years. He is survived by his sister, Patricia O'NEILL of Calgary, his nephews and nieces, and his cousins, Lorraine and John WILLIAMS, Sue HEARN and Neil and Cynthia O'DONNELL. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10: 30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 8th at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Sherbourne Street, north of Wellesley at the corner of Earl Street, Toronto. The family will greet Donald's Friends in the church before the service. Please make donations to the charity of your choice.
