Dentist helped all who needed him

When Doctor Surender WADEHRA arrived in Canada in the early 1970s, he was in for a cruel awakening.
The young dentist, like so many others before and after him, was tossed into a vicious cycle where his credentials went overlooked.
Instead, he found himself sweeping hair from the floor of a local salon.
Though many doubted he could be a dentist again, he was determined to prove them wrong. Gifted with a photographic memory and driven by a desire to make a difference, WADEHRA worked hard to pass the National Board Examinations required to practise dentistry in Canada.
In the next 30 years, he established a reputation in Toronto as a practitioner who opened his door to thousands of patients, including many who didn't have any money or coverage to pay.
WADEHRA, 66, died last month at Toronto's Saint_Joseph's Health Centre with his family by his side.
"The clinic wasn't about the money. It was about his desire to help," said son Manish, one of WADEHRA's three children.
"My father was the type of man that would be hard-pressed to turn anyone away from treatment regardless of them having coverage or not," he said. "Payment was always a secondary issue."
WADEHRA was born the fourth of seven children in Jammu in northern India on January 23, 1940. His father had served as a doctor in the Indian army and WADEHRA also put his medical skills to use in the military, serving in Punjab, India.
"He had great respect for his father and he wanted to do it to honour his family," said his son.
In 1971, WADEHRA married Raman MEHRA, with whom he had corresponded as Friends since she visited from Alberta.
"She came back and they had a whirlwind courtship of four to five days," their son said.
The pair was apart six months. In early 1972, he flew to be with his wife in Edmonton. They later moved to Toronto. WADEHRA also worked for many years as the dentist to the Indian High Commission. At the same time, he ran his own practice at Bloor and Dufferin Sts., helping more than 5,000 patients from 1978 to 2006. His son says he loved his multicultural surroundings.
"This was a sentiment close to my father's heart as he himself was an immigrant and enjoyed Canada's diversity."
Although he stayed in Canada, WADEHRA kept a home steeped in Indian culture.
He gave so many Bollywood films to visitors that his children nicknamed him "Indian Blockbuster."

In loving memory of Edith SAVAGE, who died peacefully on April 6, 2006, in her 75th year. Edith was predeceased by her husband Robert (Bud) SAVAGE. Those who knew Edith will remember her for her optimism, strength and courage against a number of physical challenges in recent years, her infectious laugh, her ability to tell humorous and captivating stories and her unrelenting love for her grandchildren, Sarah SAVAGE of Toronto, Fuad AZZEH of Sudbury, and Geoffrey SAVAGE of Toronto. She will be deeply and sorrowfully missed by her children Timothy and Marilyn SAVAGE of Toronto, Kymm and Wael AZZEH of Sudbury, and Pamela SAVAGE of Toronto. With dignity and grace, surrounded by her devoted children and grandchildren on January 2, 2006. Our mother lived her 81 years with a fierce independence, but such a kind spirit that touched the lives of her sisters, children, her Friends and all who came in contact with her. She was a constant friend and mentor to us all. Mom is now with her friend and husband, our father William (Bill) LONGMORE, who passed away 20 years ago December 24, 1985. Mother devoted all of her time to others through her quilting and charitable causes and was an active member of the London Health Science Centre Hospital Auxiliary as Convenor for the Boutique and Flower Shop. Mother was a daughter and Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of Maple, Ruth and Bethlehem Chapters. She was an active member of the Glamis Quilters and a past member of the Friendship Quilters. Predeceased by her sisters Joan WADSWORTH and Marjorie FELLOWS and survived by her sisters Phyllis ELLIS and Joan DE BRUYNE (George). Her children Bruce LONGMORE (Joan) Greenwood, Nova Scotia, Bonnie GREASON (Gerald) Owen Sound, Ontario, Paulette ELIE (Michael) London, Ontario, Sara KANE (Terance) London, Ontario, Scott LONGMORE (April) London, Ontario. After a long and courageous battle with kidney and heart disease, Margaret LUNAU passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2006 at 7: 20 p.m. at Fairview Lodge at the age of 73. Daughter of the late William and Mabel WADSWORTH of Dawson Creek, British Columbia. Former wife of the late Ken CHARLTON and loving wife to Bruce LUNAU. Loving mother of Lynn REID and Ann FRENCH. Devoted and cherished "Grandma" of Blair, Jessica, Samantha and Rachel. An only child, she will be sadly missed by her extended family and Friends.
