Body found in parking lot
34-year-old Owen Sound man charged with manslaughter
By Jonathon
JACKSON with files from Michael
DEN
TANDT and Bill
HENRY,
Page A1
An Owen Sound man has been charged with manslaughter after the
death of an Owen Sound businessman died after what police believe
may have been an "altercation" Monday night.
James MORELLI, 34, has been remanded in custody pending a bail
hearing today. He was charged after William "Larry"
HILSDEN was
found unconsciious in a downtown parking lot Monday night.
Two people were originally taken into custody Tuesday, but one
was later released.
Chief Tom KAYE of the Owen Sound Police Services said earlier
Tuesday, before any charges had been laid, that police were "
investigating it as though there were foul play involved, but
to what extent that is, we don't know."
Yellow crime scene tape cordoned off a large section of the municipal
parking lot behind the Golden Sand restaurant, formerly the Ritz
Cafe, on Tuesday.
Const. Chantelle
BEIRNES of the Mount Forest-based Ontario Provincial
Police
Forensic
Identification Unit and acting Capt. Greg
SCOTT
of Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services filmed the lot from
an aerial fire truck.
James MORTON lives in an apartment above the restaurant. He said
in an interview he was returning from a walk Monday night when
he saw two men in the parking lot. One was lying on the ground
next to the open driver's door of a truck, his legs under the
vehicle.
"I thought the other guy had beat him up or something,"
MORTON
said, "but he said, 'I found him like this and I can't get a
pulse.' I tried and I couldn't get one either."
MORTON said the first man called 911. Emergency services worked
on the unconscious man for some time before moving him to the
Owen Sound hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The cause of death was not released by police and hospital staff
declined to provide that information. Police said in a news release
Tuesday night an autopsy will be performed in London on Thursday.
Darlene NELSON, a server at the Golden Sand restaurant, said
HILSDEN was a regular customer at the restaurant, eating there
between five and seven days a week.
"He was my landlord for six years and I love him dearly,"
NELSON
said.
She said
HILSDEN, 61, ate a late meal Monday and left through
the rear entrance at about 10 p.m. According to a news release
from the city police, he was found unconscious approximately
30 minutes later in the parking lot.
Few other details have been released but acting Staff Sgt. Vince
WURFEL said in the news release police would like to speak to
anyone who "may have witnessed an altercation in the municipal
parking lot in the 900 block of 3rd Avenue East."
People are asked to call the police at 519-376-1234 or Crime
Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
HILSDEN owned a number of residential properties and businesses
in and near Owen Sound over the years. They included a restaurant
along the East Bayshore Road, a downtown home electronics store
called Hilsden Sight and Sound and the Ted and Grace's snack
bar at the corner of 2nd Avenue and 14th Street West. He was
in the process of rebuilding Ted and Grace's after a 2004 fire
gutted the landmark.
"He was always a good employer to work for," said Jamie
JOHNSTON,
who worked for several years at Hilsden Sight and Sound. "He
always treated us good… even when times were tough, he always
made sure I got paid."
HILSDEN's brother, Ronald
HILSDEN, said Tuesday the family did
not wish to comment.

SODERMAN,
Eric
Charles
Eric passed away peacefully at Lake of the Woods District Hospital,
Kenora, Ontario October 30, 2006 following a courageous six year
battle with cancer. Despite many setbacks Eric always maintained
his quick wit and his resolve to share more time with loved ones.
Eric was born in Toronto on November 16, 1953. He spent his early
years in London Ontario, graduating from the University of Western
Ontario with degrees in Geology and Education. Many summers growing
up were spent in Minaki on the Winnipeg River and his passion
for the north led him to fulfill his dream of raising his family
there. Eric was a gifted teacher, musician, outdoorsman, hockey
player, herbalist, dog trainer, craftsman and poet. He was a
man that had the "common touch" accepting everyone he met. Eric
taught in Ferland, Whitedog, Whitefish Bay, Rat Portage, and
Kenora. His patience, story telling and humour made him a very
special teacher who made a difference in many lives of both young
and old. Known as Soddy, music was one of his passions. From
teaching his children, to playing guitar in a succession of bands
he always took his music and his audience seriously. He dressed
for the occasion and gave each performance his all even in the
midst of his painful illness. The most important thing in Eric's
life was his family and their love sustained him. Eric was predeceased
by his father Lawrence, and his step-father Gerry
BROWN. He is
survived by his wife
Vickie (née
TANNER,) son Kristopher and
daughter Holly. Sharing their grief are his mother Carolyn
BROWN
(Paul ONDERWATER,) his brothers Mark (Sue) and Kristopher (Wendy)
and a large extended family of relatives and Friends. A celebration
of Eric's Life was held November 4, 2006 in Kenora. Donations
